Signs You May Be Suffering From Too Much Sugar

June 15, 2019

We live in a world in which we’re eating more unhealthy processed foods than ever before. Since everyone is constantly on-the-go, more and more people are reaching for fast and prepackaged food full of sodium and sugar for their meals. While the side effects of increased sodium intake are commonly known, not many Americans understand what happens to their body when they consume too much sugar.

Sugar is a deadly culprit, as too much sugar intake can lead to a variety of health problems. What’s more is that sugar shows itself in our body in multiple different ways. Here are some signs you may be suffering from too much sugar.

You constantly crave sugar

Sugar can be considered similar to a drug, where the more you consume sugar, the more you’ll crave it. It is especially addictive, and your body processes sugar in a never-ending cycle. It all starts with the craving of sugar, then a sugar high, followed by a crash. Constantly consuming sugar will trigger a hormonal response in your body because your hormones are used to the cycle of sugar highs then dramatic sugar lows. So if you find yourself constantly craving something sweet, this could be a sign something else is going on in your body.

Nothing tastes as sweet as it once did

Sugar overkill can create a weird feeling in your tastebuds where things don’t seem as sweet as they once were. A diet high in sugar can bombard your tastebuds where they are constantly used to the sweet substance, creating what is known as a “base level” of sweetness. This base level causes you to eat more sweet foods because you are unable to feel the sugar rush right away. To combat this, cut down your sugar intake for the next few weeks, then try something sweet again. You’ll most likely find your tastebuds have adjusted and you’re able to enjoy sugar in moderation.

You are breaking out around your cheeks and chin

A diet high in sugar can increase the production of hormones tied to inflammatory acne. If you are noticing your cheeks and chin breaking out when your skin is normally flawless, this can be a sign you have too much sugar in your diet. Additionally, increased sugar intake can also cause your skin to look dull and flaky.

Mood swings are the new normal

Some studies have shown that sugar can be linked to mood disorders such as depression. Sugar can also change up how the neurotransmitters in your brain work. These are the signals that help a person feel happy, and too much sugar can cause severe mood swings on the regular. If you are noticing that you’re often quite moody, chances are it can be the sugar messing with your brain’s natural functions.

Insomnia reigns supreme

It is no secret that eating something sweet before bed can cause problems in dozing off. You may first feel hyper, then when your sugar levels crash, it will seem easier to fall asleep. But since your blood sugar will be at its lowest once you fall asleep, your quality of sleep may not be as satisfying. If you feel groggy despite plenty of hours of shuteye, look to see when you last consumed sugar. As a rule of thumb, you should always stop eating sugar at least two hours before your head hits the pillow. Luckily, there are some supplement manufacturers who can help you fall asleep naturally if you constantly suffer from insomnia.

There are a lot of factors that can happen when you consume too much sugar, so listen to your body if any of these symptoms sound too close to home. Try cutting down your sugar intake and replace it with much healthier, whole foods, and always contact a doctor for help cutting sugar from your life once and for all.
