Physiological Therapy: 5 Chiropractic Services Beyond Adjustments

February 18, 2020

Did you know that humans have been practicing chiropractic care for over 2000 years?

Spinal manipulation dates back to ancient Greece and Hippocrates himself. However, there’s much more to chiropractic care than just “cracking your back”.

Most chiropractors offer a variety of physiological therapy services that can be used to treat everything from migraine headaches to upset stomachs.

Keep reading to learn about five chiropractic services that go beyond spinal adjustments.

1. Therapeutic Massage

Massage therapy offers a ton of benefits to the tissues of the body. It helps alleviate swelling, improve blood flow, and loosen up tight muscles. Your chiropractor might use massage in conjunction with adjustments and other therapy methods to restore range of motion in sore joints.

Massage is also a great treatment to help reduce stress. Lowering stress levels gives you more energy and helps reduce the number of headaches and illnesses you suffer over time.

2. Dietary Guidance

One goal of natural chiropractic care is to take a holistic view of health, which means caring for the entire body, including the digestive system. So much of what goes on in our bodies can be tied to how we eat.

Many chiropractors offer dietary guidance for those who are looking to lose weight or increase muscle mass. Your chiropractor might also suggest supplements to help improve your immune system and increase your stamina.

3. Heat and Cold Therapy

Heat and cold therapies have been used for centuries as a non-invasive way to relieve joint and muscle pain. Your chiropractor might prescribe an alternating regime of applying heat and cold to a sensitive area to reduce inflammation and fight pain. They’ll often do this in the office where they can monitor the effects, and they’ll follow this up with a plan for you to do the same at home.

Some chiropractors use cold therapy lasers for a more targeted spin on this traditional method. The lasers direct a special wavelength of light into the skin, causing improved circulation and increased activity in the body’s healing receptors.

4. Ultrasound and Electrotherapy

Electrical muscle stimulation involves using electricity to help loosen up tight muscles. The chiropractor will place small electrode pads on your skin and connect them to a machine that sends light electrical pulses through the muscles. This is an effective treatment for back pain and muscle spasms.

In a similar way, ultrasound waves are a great way to send heat energy deep into muscle and joint tissue. The noise vibration from the ultrasound machine reduces inflammation and promotes tissue healing.

5. Exercise

The chiropractor’s ultimate goal is to heal your injuries, but they also want to prevent future injuries from happening. To do this, they may work with you on an exercise plan to keep your body strong and your joints moving.

They’ll work on strengthening muscles to prevent future muscle strains. They may prescribe exercises that will keep your joints lubricated so you can move around without future pain.

Stretching is also an important part of injury prevention. Your chiropractor will teach you how to do regular stretches at home that will keep your muscles loose and improve the range of motion in your joints.
