Mental Strength: 7 Awesome Tips on How to Feel More Confident

February 16, 2020

According to one survey done, only 60% of girls and 67% of guys said that they felt confident in themselves.

if you find yourself in that percentage, you may be wondering how to gain some confidence and enjoy your life a little bit more.

Are you trying to learn how to feel more confident? If yes, you should check out some of our best tips by clicking right here.

1. Don’t Trust Your Memory as Fact

When trying to build your confidence, make sure you don’t use your memory as fact. Your brain can’t really store information exactly as it happens, and the more time that passes, the less likely it will be that that memory is actually accurate.

It’s one of the reasons eyewitness accounts are so unreliable.

Your brain also does something called confirmation bias. That means that it will store information that confirms your own beliefs, values, and even how you view yourself. This process helps protect your brain from being loaded with too much info.

When working to build your confidence, realize that your brain and memory isn’t a reliable source.

One example is that if you have low self-esteem, your brain will store events or moments that will confirm your lack of self-confidence. It may even be all you remember about an event, but you have to keep everything in perspective.

2. Affirm Yourself

If you are struggling with self empowerment, you may need to tell yourself some affirmations. People with low confidence tend not to focus on their strengths. They always see their weaknesses, which can lead to lower confidence.

To avoid this, you can make a list of some of the strengths and talents you have. Add the accomplishments you have too. Try and be honest with yourself. Give yourself credit where it’s due.

It doesn’t matter how cliché it is as long as it’s accurate. Anything kind you can tell yourself will help negate all the negativity you feel about yourself.

A lot of your confidence levels rely on your daily thoughts and feelings about yourself. If you constantly tell yourself you can’t do anything and that you’re bad at everything, your confidence levels will sink.

3. Focus on Specifics

Another thing you can try is to focus on specifics.

If you don’t know what exactly the problem is, it’ll be harder to figure out how to deal with it.

You may know that you have low self-esteem, but in what areas? Where do you feel all of the negative emotions? Where are your skills actually limited? What areas do you wish you had more confidence in?

When you’re not specific enough, your brain can start to overgeneralize everything, and you may start to feel overwhelmed and feel like your confidence levels are low in every area of your life.

Narrowing down a specific area to get more confidence may also help it seem more realistic and attainable.

4. Stop Comparing Yourself

One thing that will make sure to zap all of your confidence is by comparing yourself to other people.

Social media makes it so easy to judge ourselves against other people. However, most of the presentations that people offer of themselves on social media are rarely accurate. This is why you can’t do that.

It will start to eat away at you because you aren’t even comparing the same thing. You may see someone who looks beautiful on social media, but you may not realize how many hours of makeup they went through to look that way.

If you do feel the need to compare yourself to someone, compare it to yourself. Realize how far you’ve come and take note of how much progress and improvement you’ve made.

5. Focus on the Positive

You should also try and focus more on the positive rather than the negative.

Our natural inclination is to focus on the negative to help keep us safe from any danger. However, we aren’t always in danger, so we have to retrain our minds to focus on positivity.

Some things that might help is to come up with five positive thoughts to counteract a negative thought you might have.

If you have time, you can even write some of your negative thoughts out and figure out a way to turn them into a positive one.

6. Force Confidence

If all else fails, fake it ‘til you make it.

One of the first steps to feeling more confident is to force it and tell yourself that you already are confident even if you don’t feel like it.

When you find yourself feeling nervous, take a second to tell yourself that you are confident and that you can handle it. Use your senses to pull you into the moment, and then you’ll be able to cultivate that feeling as you practice this more and more.

7. Set Realistic Goals

Lastly, you should make sure that you set goals for yourself that are actually attainable.

If you commit to these small goals, it can help boost your confidence. Try avoiding big resolutions, like New Year’s that come attached with a lot of expectations.

Instead, focus on changing small things, and over time, your confidence will grow.
