How To Use A Hair Mask: A Step-by-Step Guide

September 22, 2022

There are many things you can do to look after and preserve your hair. For instance, you may look at getting a hair transplant in Turkey when faced with hair loss. This can help you permanently recover any lost hair and restore your confidence at the same time. There are other methods of looking after your hair that are less surgical, and one of the most popular is hair masks. Hair masks are used by professionals and hair care fans alike, as they tout many benefits and are super easy to use. So, here is out step-by-step guide on how to use a hair mask. Keep reading to find out more!

  • Choose Your Mask Carefully

The most important step is to first of all choose the right mask for your hair type. If you have fine hair, you’ll want something a little lighter that will still provide you with enough hydration. If you have coarser hair, you’ll need a heavier mask that will be thick enough to fully coat all of your hair. Damaged hair will also need a different type of mask too, as it may need ingredients in it that will repair it and protect it from further damage too. Even if you have your hair dyed, you may need to be careful that nothing in the mask will strip the colour from your hair. So, make sure you know exactly what type of hair mask you need before using one, and you’ll see much better results afterwards.

  • Clean Your Hair

Once you have your hair mask selected, you need to ensure that you apply it onto clean hair. If you layer it up onto dirty hair, the oils and product build-up will prevent it from fully penetrating to your scalp and coating the hair. You want to shampoo your hair only, as the mask will act as your conditioner. Be careful not to use a shampoo that strips your hair of all its natural oils too, as these are necessary for healthy hair. This means that no matter how many hair masks you do, you’ll find it impossible to keep your hair looking and feel good.

  • Remove Excess Water

Once you’ve shampooed your hair, you’ll want to remove the excess water from it. Your hair mask will work much better on damp hair, as if it’s too wet, it won’t adhere and will start sliding off. You should never squeeze your hair or rub it with a towel though. This is because your hair is in its most fragile state while wet, so you’ll do way more damage than good. Instead, use a microfibre towel or a cotton t-shirt, and allow it to absorb the excess water. This way you’ll be able to partially dry your hair without damaging it with friction.

  • Section Parts Of Your Hair

Next, you’ll want to section off your hair into smaller pieces so that you can apply the mask evenly. People with thicker or curly hair may need to take more sections as they will have a lot more hair to work with. Keep each section separate by clipping it out the way, so that you can evenly coat your hair and get all of it covered.

  • Apply Your Mask

Now it’s time to apply the mask. You might like to do this with your hands or with a brush, it’s entirely up to you. Some people prefer using their hands as they feel as though they can get the job done quicker and coat the entirety of their hair with ease. Others prefer using a brush as it can do a more thorough job. Really, it all depends on what you prefer and how you like to apply your mask. You want to focus mainly on the mid-sections and the ends, as your roots should be relatively healthy anyway. However, if you have damaged hair, say from bleaching it too much, applying to the roots will also be a good idea. You want to massage the product onto your hair, so even if you use a brush, you should use your hands at this point. Doing so will help you lock in the moisture and protection that the mask can offer you.

  • Leave It To Do Its Job

Once you’ve covered your hair completely, it’s time to let it do it’s thing. It’s a good idea to wrap your hair in a hot towel or t-shirt to help seal in the mask’s ingredients. With the added heat from the towel and your scalp, the mask should penetrate much deeper in your hair too. You’ll want to leave it on for as long as the manufacturer recommends, so be sure to set a timer to remind yourself to wash it off!

  • Rinse It Off

After your timer has gone off, you’ll need to thoroughly rinse out the hair mask. It’s best not to use scolding hot water as it’s very damaging to your hair. Instead, use lukewarm water to carefully rinse out the product. You need to ensure you properly rinse it out of your hair, otherwise it will end up feeling weighed down and greasy once dry. After you’ve rinsed it off, you can then continue with your usual hair care routine, and you’ll be left with gorgeous shiny hair!

So, there you have it! It really is that simple to use a hair mask. You don’t need a lot of fancy tools or tricks to use one successfully either. In fact, in 7 easy steps, you can inject moisture and shine back into your hair without stepping foot into a salon. Now you know how easy it is, make sure you add hair masks into your routine. You’ll definitely be able to tell the difference!
