How to Prevent Seizures Using Natural Remedies

Seizures can be terrifying, dangerous, and even life-threatening. The vast majority of people never experience or even witness a seizure in their lives. However, many others suffer from a seizure as a result of an illness or other conditions, and still others live with seizure disorders for part or all of their lives.

A seizure is caused by a sudden and uncontrolled electrical impulse in the brain. There are numerous different types of seizures and they vary in both presentation and intensity. However, the most severe can cause many injuries and worse. Knowing how to prevent seizures is paramount for the people who experience them.

If you are wondering about natural ways to prevent seizures, read on. There are medications that can control the frequency and ferocity of seizures, but they come with side effects. As a result, many individuals living with seizure disorders choose to pursue natural options instead of or in addition to the medications prescribed by their doctors.  Furthermore, all of the following natural remedies can aid in improving overall, general health as well.

1. Vitamins

There are several different vitamins that appear to decrease the frequency of seizures for some. Research has shown that magnesium deficiency can lead to seizures, so taking magnesium supplements can help reduce or even eradicate seizures altogether. The same goes for deficiencies in Vitamin E and Vitamin D.

There has been much research into the use of the above vitamins and others in treating epilepsy and other seizure disorders. However, as with any medication, vitamin, or supplement, speak to your doctor before starting new vitamins and for any seizures treatment.

2. Diet

The ketogenic diet is very popular these days for people who want to lose weight and stay fit. However, following a ketogenic diet can also help in the prevention of seizures. It is a diet that is both low-carb and low-protein and is very restrictive, but the high-fat content seems to work to lower the experience of seizures in patients who give it a try.

3. Herbal Supplements

More and more people today are turning to herbs and ayurvedic treatments to self-medicate for a variety of conditions and ailments. There have not been many studies yet about the effectivity of herbs for seizures. But, anecdotal evidence shows that these natural treatments can and do work for some.

Be careful with these types of treatments though; many of them can be very dangerous when used incorrectly and can cause illness or even death. However, under the supervision of a trained practitioner, some people with seizure disorders have learned how to prevent seizures by using herbs like lily of the valley, mistletoe, valerian, burning bush, and others.

4. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that is used worldwide today. Even scientists are not quite sure how it works, but it does work for many people for a wide variety of different conditions.

In recent years, some people have tried acupuncture to reduce the occurrence of seizures and have found some success. However, much more research needs to be done in this area to determine whether or not it can be effective for all.

How to Prevent Seizures: Different for Every Patient

Figuring out how to prevent seizures is an ongoing process and it is still under intense study by doctors and researchers. Although people have been having seizures for thousands of years, there is still much that is not known about them.

Much of the determination of treatment methods is trial and error; what works for one patient may not work for others and vice versa. However, all treatments for seizure disorders should be discussed with a medical professional before beginning them to ensure overall safety.
