How Long Does It Take to Detox? A Quick Guide

December 16, 2020

Over 30 million people in the US make the choice to take the first step to get treatment for alcohol and substance abuse. These people visit a treatment center in hopes to end their addiction.

The long physical, financial, and emotional battle people have with alcohol and drugs can push them over the wrong edge. Those wanting help from this toxic stage wonder “how long does it take to detox” when they go to a center.

Keep reading to learn more about recovery time and other steps that are important in the process.

How Long Does It Take to Detox?

Detox programs help people during the withdrawal period depending on the substance. A person can detox from alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two. The typical detox time is 3,5, or 7 days long.

It is during this time that a person will experience the worst of their withdrawal symptoms. However, it is not unusual for one’s detox period to last longer.

The type of substance a person abuses is another factor to take into consideration. While a person can detox from a substance within a week, cravings may continue for months.

The intensity of withdrawal symptoms varies too depending on one’s overall weight, metabolism, overall health, and severity of the addiction.

What Is the Most Effective and Safest Way to Detox?

Some may wonder if there are methods available to help detox more quickly and there aren’t. However, those with healthy liver and kidney function or those with a fast metabolism any notice they are able to detox quicker. The same goes for those who are detoxing from one substance rather than several at once.

It may take a few days, but any person is able to reach sobriety so long as they continue the course, although hard and distressing. Those attempting to quit alcohol may develop a fatal type of seizure known as Delirium Tremens.

While most detox symptoms are nonfatal, issues such as this or rapid dehydration can occur. The safest and most effective detox is one with assistance from medical professionals.

When you need to find out where to detox, you will need to find a “detox near me” with locations in your area. Where you go is also just as important in detoxing as the right professionals you seek can make a positive or ineffective difference.

Hang in There: Everyone’s Journey Is Different

You would be wrong to put an absolute timeline when you ask “how long does it take to detox”? In truth, the time it takes varies from person to person.

The “detox” stage is also the first phase of the recovery process. It’s not a substitute or a “quicker way” to complete therapy or rehab in its entirety.  It may be easier for some while it is a harsher struggle for others.

You may even need to restart. It is never a straight line. Although it’s not, you will get there in the end when you fight.
