Gallbladder Dysfunction

November 23, 2020

Gallbladder Dysfunction can also be known as gallbladder disease and it can describe almost any disease that affects your gallbladder.

What are the reasons for Gallbladder Dysfunction?

There are many different reasons why a person may suffer from Gallbladder Dysfunction. These include:

  • Gallstones. When gallstones form, they can grow big enough to block the passageways to the gallbladder and the bile ducts. This can cause a lot of problems, including a blockage which can cause a lot of pain.
  • Cholecystitis. This is inflammation of the gallbladder and can be acute or chronic in nature. Usually, the acute version is due to stones, while the chronic version occurs when the gallbladder shrinks and loses function.
  • Biliary dyskinesia. This occurs when the gallbladder is not functioning normally.
  • Sclerosing cholangitis. This condition is when your gallbladder becomes damaged and then scarred.

What are the symptoms of Gallbladder Dysfunction?

Though some people with Gallbladder Dysfunction don’t show any signs, most people do. Gallbladder symptoms include:

  • Pain in the upper right quadrant of your abdomen. This means that your pain is going to be under your ribs on the right side.
  • Nausea and vomiting. This pain can often lead to nausea and vomiting. Anyone suffering from chronic nausea should have their gallbladder checked out.
  • Fever and chills. If you have an infection in your gallbladder, you may have more pain, along with fever and chills.

Can Gallbladder Dysfunction get better without treatment?

Surgery isn’t always required when a patient is suffering from Gallbladder Dysfunction. That being said, if you have another problem with your gallbladder down the line, surgery might be your best option. Otherwise, you may be fighting with your gallbladder for years.

What is the treatment?

Some people may be able to treat their Gallbladder Dysfunction without surgery. Some patients are able to do this by making lifestyle changes. You are going to want to lose weight if you are struggling with it. If you are diabetic, it is important that you get that under control too!

You may be able to treat the pain with over-the-counter medications. However, if the pain is severe, you may need prescription medications.

If Gallbladder surgery is required, you will undergo a cholecystectomy. This means that your surgeon will remove your gallbladder. Most of the time, this is done laparoscopically so you are able to return back to your normal self quicker. You will spend less time in the hospital and be feeling better faster.
