Exercises Before Undergoing Knee Replacement Surgery

February 3, 2020

If you have a knee replacement scheduled in the coming months, you may be looking for ways to prepare yourself for your upcoming surgery. It may not seem like much, but preparing for your surgery in this way can greatly help you in the long run. You can complete a number of exercises to help with your surgery for months leading up to your operation. The sooner you get started, the better! In order to increase your chances of having a successful operation and recovering quickly from your operation, simply continue reading to discover a variety of gentle pre knee replacement exercises.

Leg raises:

First lie on your side, with your top leg placed directly on top of your bottom leg. Support your torso by placing your head on your bottom hand. You can place your top arm on the floor in front of your body. In order to give yourself a little extra support, which will keep you balanced throughout your exercise. Once you’re in position and have checked your form, raise your top leg up in the air and back down again.

Repeat this motion 10 times per set, before completing the same exercise with your other leg. While it’s important to exercise the leg which will be operated on, in the weeks after your surgery you’ll be relying on your other leg in order to help you get around. So it’s important to work on exercising both of your legs.

Clamshells:

The second pre knee replacement exercise which you should complete on a daily basis is the clamshell. To get started lie on your side again and place your head on your hand again. This time bend your knee, one leg on top of the other. Next lift your top leg up, like a clamshell being opened, before placing it back down on top of your bottom leg. For each set complete 10 movements for each of your legs.

Seated kicks:

The next move which will help prepare your leg for a knee operation is the seated kick. Firstly find a sturdy chair and sit on the edge of your seat. Make sure that both of your feet are flat on the floor. When you’re ready to lift one of your legs up till your leg is straight, from your thigh to your toe. Then place your leg back down onto the floor. Repeat this action 10 times per set for each leg. This is a particularly great exercise to start off with if you find it hard to get up and down off the floor and have limited mobility.

Chair assisted push-ups:

Now place each of your hands on the edge of your chair. One hand placed on either side of your chair. During these exercises you’re going to use your arms to support you in order to push your body down so that your bottom is halfway between the level of your chair’s seat and the floor. Before hoisting your torso back up. Just be sure that your feet are glued to the floor so that you don’t slip while you’re completing your chair assisted push-ups.

If you complete the four simple exercises which are listed out above on a daily basis in the weeks or months leading up to your knee operation, you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of recovering quickly from a successful knee operation.
