Much has been said about self-care and how important it is for the mind and body. In the workplace, self-care is extra important as it can be a high-stress environment. Practicing self-care at work is essential, so, here are five ways you can demonstrate self-care in the workplace.
Try Mindful Breathing
It is common knowledge that life in the workplace can sometimes become very overwhelming, opening you up to feelings of anxiety and high levels of stress. One way to practice self-care in that situation is to practice mindful breathing. Taking deep breaths and focusing your concentration allows your body to relieve stress and stabilise blood pressure.
Practice self-care by taking 3-4 opportunities during your workday to practice this technique and let go of any tension or worry that has accumulated in your body.
Get Up and Move
The workday is typically 8-9 hours long, and it is not uncommon for people to spend the entire time sitting at their desks. However, this can lead to stiff joints and back pain. Take care of yourself by getting up from your desk at regular intervals.
Use the opportunity to squat and stretch your shoulders and arms, visit a co-worker in the next office, or simply jog around the office for a few laps. To make it easy to remember, set a reminder on your phone to notify you when you have been sitting for too long.
Master the Work-Life Balance
Getting a handle on your work-life balance is a really essential way to practice self-care when it comes to working, as carrying work over into your private life is one of the main ways that people become stressed.
By finding a way to find that perfect balance between your working day and your personal time, you should be able to reduce some of the stress that this is causing you. Try to do this with simple steps like not having your work emails on your phone, or having a work mobile number instead of using your personal one.
Eat Nourishing Food
One of the best demonstrations of self-care is healthy eating. While a quick burger or a veggie bowl may be the easiest thing you can grab from the lunch tray, they will not give your body the nutrition it needs.
Take better care of yourself by making your lunch as healthy as possible, prioritising a good selection of proteins, complex carbs and vegetables that will keep your body energised and your brain alert.
Clean Up and Beautify Your Workspace
If you usually experience feelings of anxiety in the workplace, one of the best ways to dial down those feelings is to clean up and organise your workspace. Working in a messy space can make it hard to think clearly and make you feel stressed, confused and anxious.
Once you have cleaned it up, try adding some art, photos of your friends and family or personal nick-nacks that might make it feel more like home and therefore less stressful.
