5 Tell-Tale Signs It’s Time to Improve Your Dental Habits

June 22, 2022

Plaque of the patient, stone. Dentistry treatment of dental plaque, professional oral hygiene. The concept of harm to smoking and cleaning teeth

Most dentists recommend brushing your teeth for at least 4 minutes per day. That adds up to 79 days in a lifetime. The real average is 45-70 seconds or 15-23 days in a lifetime.

Healthy oral habits have a major impact on your overall health. Risk factors associated with poor oral hygiene include bone loss, hardened arteries, blood clots, inflamed blood vessels, high blood pressure, fertility problems, and more.

Read on to learn about 5 poor dental hygiene symptoms that indicate you need to change your habits. Making these changes early prevents them from becoming debilitating diseases.

1. Gum Disease

46% of adults 30 years or older have signs of gingivitis or gum disease. 9% have a severe case known as periodontitis. They’re 2 of the most common diseases caused by poor dental hygiene.

Bleeding after brushing or flossing is one of the first signs of a problem with your gums. Swelling proves that there’s an irritant behind them. They may even become discolored or wear away and expose the roots of your teeth.

2. Tooth Sensitivity or Pain

Tooth pain is a common effect of poor oral hygiene and the first one that comes to mind for most patients. It can be caused by:

  • Broken, chipped, or fractured teeth
  • Infections
  • Decay

Sensitivity to hot or cold is a sign of an even more serious issue. You may need a procedure such as a root canal if you experience pain after drinking ice water or warm coffee.

3. Tongue Changes

Failing to brush properly is one of the major causes of poor oral hygiene, especially if you ignore your tongue. Take a toothbrush or tongue scraper over it every day. If you don’t, you may notice changes in its color or texture.

4. Halitosis

The simplest answer to the question “what is halitosis” is that it’s the medical name for bad breath. It can be caused by tobacco products or certain foods, but it’s also one of the most common poor dental hygiene symptoms.

Failing to brush and floss lets bacteria and plaque build up on your teeth. They release odors that affect your breath.

5. Discoloration

This is one of the signs of poor oral hygiene that you should never ignore. It develops after a long period of neglect and decay.

Compare the color of each of your teeth to see if one of them looks significantly different from the other. This can be a serious issue, especially if the affected tooth is also loose or painful.

Other Poor Dental Hygiene Symptoms

Habits that harm your dental hygiene cause problems that develop over time. You may not even notice their effects until a serious disease or pain makes them obvious.

Poor dental hygiene symptoms include gum disease, changes to the color or texture of the tongue, tooth sensitivity, pain, or discoloration, and halitosis. They’re all ways that your body cries out to you for better oral habits such as brushing or flossing and seeing your dentist more often.
