1. Cost

First things first, it’s important to take into consideration the cost of each appointment. When we consider that 50% of at-risk Americans are unable to afford mental health treatment, it’s easy to see why cost is a primary consideration.

Of course, psychologists with more experience are likely to be more costly than those without. If you’re looking to stick to a budget, consider psychologists who are new to practice and looking to build their client portfolio.

Once you determine the price of each appointment, it’s crucial to determine whether or not your insurance coverage will be accepted by this psychologist. While most psychologists will accept insurance, this isn’t necessarily the case for all. To protect yourself, be sure to find out in advance.

2. Sex and Age

Next, it’s time to consider the sex and the age of the psychologist.

In terms of sex, some patients will feel more comfortable speaking to a member of the same sex about personal issues. In a sense, the same can be said for age. Some patients will prefer to speak with a psychologist that is in and around their own age bracket.

Remember, you’re going to be sharing a wealth of personal and emotionally-charged information with this person. You want to ensure that you’re setting yourself up for success in selecting the best person to work with.

4. Availablity and Location

Short and simple, what is the availability for the psychologist and where are they located?

Some psychologists may only offer daytime appointments whereas others work in the evenings. Depending on your schedule, you want to ensure that your psychologist is available at a time that works for you.

It’s also important to consider where this psychologist is located. If you don’t have access to a car, you’ll want to determine whether the office is accessible by public transit.

5. Physical Appointments or Virtual

Do you want to meet with your psychologist in person or are you open to meeting virtually?

In today’s climate, meeting in-person isn’t always an option. While some psychologists have the space to accommodate social distancing, this isn’t the case for all. When physical distancing isn’t possible, psychologists will often open their practice to virtual appointments.

Before booking an appointment, it’s important to know whether in-person or virtual appointments align best with your desires, abilities and schedule.
