Did you know that the lifetime prevalence of lower back pain is between 60% to 70% in industrialized countries? This means that it’s very likely that you suffer from this type of chronic pain too.
But that doesn’t mean you should live with it. In fact, there are some things you can try to lessen the pain!
Here are 5 easy habits you can adopt to maintain the best back health possible.
1. Sleep With More Pillows
You probably already have pillows for your head. but you should get some more for your knees!
When you put pillows beneath your knees while sleeping on your back, this can help your spine be more naturally aligned. If you’re a side sleeper, then put the pillow between your knees for the same effect.
2. Sit up Straight
This sounds like an easy habit, but when you’re consciously thinking about it, it’s easier said than done! If you’re working long hours at the computer, you might inevitably find yourself hunched over within an hour.
Try to make a conscious effort to tell yourself to sit up straight. It might feel a bit sore to do so at first, but before you know it, you’ll build more strength in your lower back and it’ll become second nature.
3. Sit for Shorter Periods of Time
Even if your job involves working full-time at your computer, it’s important to sit for shorter periods of time. Set a timer to get up and walk around every hour. This can relieve all the stress you’re putting on your spine when you sit for long periods.
4. Exercise Often
Being sedentary can have lots of adverse effects on your health. Not only can your back get weaker, but it can make you more susceptible to diseases and obesity.
You’ll strengthen your back and other muscles surrounding it whenever you’re active.
Of course, make sure you’re exercising in a safe manner and that you’re not over-extending. Always properly warm up and cool down before your exercise routines.
5. See a Chiropractor Regularly
Chiropractors are medical professionals who help with spine health. As you can see, it’s important to see one regularly, especially if you already have back pain issues. They’ll help you with proper back care.
But not all chiropractors are great ones. So make the right choice by carefully researching ones near you and seeing who’s the best fit. This might mean experimenting with a few professionals before making a final decision.
