June 16, 2022

Whiten – a beautiful smile and teeth whitening treatment before and after.

Many dental providers have confirmed that fewer and fewer people are making oral hygiene a priority, which means they aren’t brushing their teeth. When you don’t take time to care for your teeth, it can lead to stains and bad breath.

Understanding the types of teeth stains and the different ways you can treat them is essential. Read on now to learn about what to do about stained teeth.

What Are Teeth Stains?

Teeth stains are abnormalities that develop in your teeth due to neglect, accident, or disease. White teeth are usually healthy teeth that have developed mottled stains or discolored from regular use.

These teeth stains are usually interpreted as health issues such as bone breakdown, an overgrowth of cells under the enamel, and possibly a vitamin or mineral deficiency. The reason teeth stains happen and how they develop is because of our lifestyles and habits.

What Causes Teeth Stains?

We all know brushing and flossing are keys to avoiding teeth staining. However, our teeth also contain nerve endings responsible for feelings of pain and sensitivity.

If these are negatively impacted by regular toothbrushing, the teeth will become sensitive and easily stain. Abrasions are the most common cause of teeth stains.

Other causes of stains on your teeth include:

  • Coffee
  • Different types of food

Types of Teeth Stains

There are many different types of teeth stains. The most common types include:

Extrinsic Teeth Stains: An extrinsic tooth stain when staining occurs on the service of your tooth. This can be due to the food and beverages you consume or a build-up of protein on the tooth’s surface.

It occurs when staining particles, such as pigmented residue from food or drink, build up in the film of protein that covers the tooth enamel.

Intrinsic Teeth Stains: An intrinsic tooth stain is staining that occurs below the tooth surface. It happens when the stain-causing particles work through the tooth’s exterior and accumulate inside the tooth enamel. Excessive fluoride use has been linked to intrinsic teeth staining.

Of course, when you speak with your dental provider they can speak more in-depth about the other types of stains such as coffee stains and more.

How to Treat a Tooth Stain

There are several methods of treating stains on your tooth. The top choice is to visit a dentist specializing in stain removal, such as searching for a Hollywood smile near me.
