How to Wakeboard: A Guide for Beginners

January 13, 2021

Wakeboarding is a fun and exciting sport that will keep you having a blast out on the water all summer long. Many people see people wakeboarding on television and think that it’s something they could never do. Riding a wakeboard isn’t easy, but with practice, you can be out there riding wakes sooner than you might think.

If you’re interested in learning how to wakeboard, you came to the right place. Learn the basics of this super fun water activity right here so you’ll be ready to get started as soon as the weather gets warm. Read on.

Wakeboarding Basics

Wakeboarding exploded in popularity in the mid-1990s. It’s a good thing it did because people were no longer enthralled by the allure of waterskiing and many sought something new and different. This new sport, which allowed participants to ride on a single board instead of two independent skis, encouraged newer and younger people to get excited about being towed behind a boat, and it invited bigger and better tricks, too.

Today, people enjoy wakeboarding not just nationwide but worldwide. Wakeboarding is an adrenaline-fueled sport that is easy to learn and even easier to enjoy than ever before.

It’s easy to get started in this sport. You’ll need a boat with a tow rope to pull you, of course, but just a few other pieces of equipment are needed. You will always need to wear a life jacket when wakeboarding, and you will want to wear a rash guard as well when you’re first starting out. If the water is cold, a wetsuit can be a big help, too.

When it comes to choosing a wakeboard and bindings, start out with a beginner board. Even if you’re a quick learner, you’ll be thankful for the stability and balance assistance provided by boards made for beginners at first. You can move up to boards made for tricks and height once you get the hang of it.

How to Wakeboard

Learning how to wakeboard is quite simple. The concept of what to do is easy. Mastering it is the hard part.

It’s kind of like riding a bike: you’ll fall a bunch of times, but keep trying, and suddenly it will click. From there, more and more practice will solidify your skills and, in time, you can start to try some tricks.

When you’re first starting out, it helps to make the tow rope as short as you can while still keeping your body a safe distance from the boat’s propeller. Get in the water with your board bound to your feet, and face the boat. Line yourself up straight behind it.

As the boat begins to move forward, bend your knees as much as you can. Stay in this position until the boat begins to move fast enough to pull your angled board to the surface. Then, slowly stand up.

Although this process sounds simple, there are lots of places where potential error can occur. However, keep trying and don’t get frustrated. You will be successful in time.

Happy Wakeboarding

Now that you know how to wakeboard, what are you waiting for? Get out there and start trying it as soon as you are able. With perseverance, dedication, and practice, you’ll be out there catching air and doing big and amazing tricks before you know it. Good luck!
