Fit & Fabulous: How to Stay Active in Your Golden Years

September 19, 2019

When retirement frees up your time, you suddenly have more opportunities than ever to travel, spend time with family, and enjoy your hobbies. You’ll also have more time to devote to a healthy lifestyle. While it can be tricky to be as active as you once were, remember that you don’t need to limit yourself in your golden years. You just need to adapt.

This guide will offer some key tips to keep moving as a senior. By prioritizing exercise and finding ways to enjoy it, you can also enjoy a long and healthy life.

Start slow

If you are getting back into fitness after some time off, go easy on yourself. Wellness and weight loss journeys take time, and you don’t want to risk injuring yourself by pushing too hard. Talk to your doctor about what activities might best best for you. They might recommend light weight lifting at the gym, swimming, walking, or exercise classes. No matter what activity you start, be sure to warm up, take it easy the first few times, and stretch thoroughly. Over time, you’ll swim for longer, lift heavier weights, and walk quicker.

Start an active hobby

Your golden years should be fun, so try finding a hobby that gets you off your feet. Activities like hiking, bird watching, bowling, cooking, and painting can all keep you moving and enrich your mind. While you are engaging in these types of hobbies, you might not even think of the time as exercise. Rather, you will feel motivated to get out of the house just because you enjoy doing so. Having something to look forward to can maintain a sense of overall well being as you age.

Ask friends to join you

While you can certainly get active alone, these activities are always more fun with friends. For example, you might ask a friend or two to take a dance lesson with you. As you are all learning to waltz, you can enjoy the benefits of dancing and share some laughs. Staying fit with friends also increases accountability. You’ll be less inclined to skip an activity when you know your friends will be there waiting for you.

Listen to your body

You don’t need to push yourself to receive the benefits of exercise. Be sure to listen to your body and respond accordingly. If you are feeling worn down and need to take a day off, then spend the day relaxing. Similarly, you should engage in lower-impact activities when you are feeling sore. You should also see your doctor if you are experiencing any pain that is preventing you from being active in general. By listening to your body’s cues, you can ensure that you are preventing overexertion and injury.

Nourish yourself

Exercise is only one of the many ways that seniors can stay healthy as they age. Nutrition is another key part of supporting your fitness goals and keeping you energized. Be sure to eat a balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, protein, and fats. If you aren’t sure how to create the best diet for your needs, ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist. You can work with this professional to plan meals to support your activity levels and special nutritional needs.

As you age, exercise becomes an increasingly important factor in your overall health. By staying active and getting out of the house, you can keep that momentum for years to come. Just be sure to prioritize your safety as you try out new activities. Over time, you will find a workout regimen that brings fitness and fun into your life.
