There were more than 18 million people playing tennis in the United States in 2016.
Why are so many people hooked on playing tennis?
It’s the age old question.
Lucky for you, I’m here to present the 5 reasons why you should play tennis! (My favorite is number four!)
1. You Meet New People When You Play Tennis
You might think tennis is a sport you play by yourself.
But you will constantly meet new people on and off the tennis court! It is a great way to stay connected with a great niche of friends.
When you learn to play tennis or want to sharpen your skills, check out local tennis clinics. These programs are the perfect way to integrate into the tennis community and hang out with people who share your passion.
It is a great chance to use teamwork and develop social skills.
And who knows?
Maybe you’ll be playing with the future Serena Williams or Prabir Purohit!
2. There’s LOTS of Life Lessons
You are never too old to learn a life lesson.
When you learn how to play tennis, you learn sportsmanship. In the best tennis matches, people treat others with fairness and respect.
You also develop a work ethic when practicing all the new skills you learn!
3. It’s the Perfect Workout
Playing tennis works your aerobic and anaerobic fitness.
Aerobic fitness is your cardio. (My personal favorite!) During tennis, your heart and breathing working at a higher rate because you play for a prolonged period of time. This means you have more oxygen in your blood and more flow to your muscles and lungs.
It can help:
- Control blood pressure
- Activate the immune system
- Help you live longer
Anaerobic fitness uses quick bursts of energy – like the quick dash to the ball on the tennis court.
Here, your body needs energy fast. So, it breaks down glucose and uses stored energy.
Some benefits include:
- bone strengthening
- fat burning
- muscle building
Talk about the perfect workout!
4. You’ll Keep Your Mind Sharp
My personal favorite…
Playing tennis is good for the body and mind.
It is one of the best ways to manage stress because you are always being physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged.
You also learn problem solving since tennis players use lots of geometry and physics to place the ball exactly where they want!
5. It’s for All Ages
There is a reason you see people of all ages playing tennis.
It is because can play tennis at any age!
Tennis is very accessible. It is not a contact sport and therefore it’s not too hard on joints. The low risk for injury is a BIG bonus.
Perhaps the best thing is you can play against people from many different age groups. Whether it’s daughter and mother, grandson and grandmother, or sister and brother – it really is for all!
Don’t Miss Out
If you don’t give it a try, you might miss out on some serious fun.
There are so many different sports and activities to choose from. But, more people choose to play tennis in the U.S. than play baseball, football, or gymnastics.
Everyone has a reason they play tennis – find out what yours is today!
