When It Is Time to See a Doctor About Your Skin Rash

August 20, 2020

Is it “just” a rash—or is it time to see your doctor for a more serious issue? A skin rash can be more than merely an annoyance: it could be the sign of a problem that needs treatment before it becomes worse.

Sometimes a rash is a result of minor skin irritation or contact with poison ivy or clothing materials that cause a reaction. However, if the rash persists (or becomes worse), it’s time to find a doctor or dermatologist to treat the condition.

When is a skin rash telling you it’s time for medical treatment? Watch for these signs and symptoms.

It Spreads

Has the rash spread to more areas of your body? If one spot becomes many areas of itchy red skin, it’s time to see your dermatologist.

With the wrong over the counter creams or treatments, a rash can react by spreading after applying the cream. When you notice your rash appears bigger or more wide-spread, you might need a prescription for the correct medication under the supervision of a doctor.

You Have a Fever

Poison oak rash or a skin rash caused by other irritants don’t often cause a fever. However, if you have a fever, you might have a skin rash that needs treatment by a doctor.

The rash and fever could be symptoms of a more severe infection or illness like shingles or mononucleosis. At the first sign of fever, seek immediate medical attention.

Blisters Appear

When your rash turns into blisters, you’re dealing with more than a simple skin irritant. It’s possible that you came into contact with a chemical or contaminant that started as a rash, then progressed to a significant skin issue.

Don’t ignore blisters that appear along with a skin rash, and don’t attempt to treat open sores on your own. Using over the counter ointments can make the rash worse and leave scarring after your skin heals. Call your doctor to treat a rash with blisters.

You Have Trouble Breathing

When a rash appears suddenly, and you also struggle to breathe, you could be suffering from an allergic reaction. Whether it’s a bug bite, sting, or heat rash, any irritated skin accompanied by wheezing or the inability to catch your breath means it’s time to call a doctor right away.

At-Home Remedies Don’t Work

Sometimes a rash isn’t a medical issue that responds to at-home remedies or over the counter medications. In some cases, your rash could be a skin condition that requires treatment from an award winning dermatologist.

Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and other skin-related issues are not rashes. They are medical issues that require the expertise of a dermatologist who can prescribe the right treatments to relieve pain, redness, and irritation.

Don’t Ignore a Skin Rash

When you first notice or feel a skin rash, keep an eye on it. If it lasts for several days or leads to other dangerous symptoms, see medical treatment.
