February 11, 2020

Being involved in an auto accident isn’t fun. In fact, it can be one of the most stressful events that you’ll ever experience. Even a minor car crash can seem like a very big deal in the moment.

That’s why it’s so important to know what to do in a fender bender. Everything happens so fast on the road that it might take time to remember all the details clearly. Thus you need to be prepared ahead of time to deal with the scene of an accident.

This article takes a look at things to remember when you’re involved in a minor car accident. Keep reading to discover insight into how to make the best out of an unfortunate situation.

1. Remain at the Scene

The first thing to remember is never to leave the scene of an accident. In fact, leaving the scene after an accident is actually a crime. So stay put.

Keep in mind that you also shouldn’t move the vehicle. This allows the police to properly investigate the accident in order to identify who was at fault.

2. Check for Injuries

Once you’re your automobile has come to a complete stop, check to see if anyone in your car is hurt. Then get out and check on the passengers in the other vehicles.

If anyone in either vehicle is injured, pass this information on to the 911 operator so that they can send medical help to the scene.

3. Call the Police

Now it’s time to call the police. Even if the damage to either car is minor and no one is hurt, the police will still need to file an accident report.

Call 911 and answer each question from the emergency response operator with as much detail as possible. This will help them understand exactly how to proceed and what needs to be passed on to the responding officers.

4. Exchange Insurance Information & Take Pictures

Once the police have been called, exchange insurance information with the other motorist. Remember, never leave the scene after exchanging information. Most insurance companies require a police report before they’ll cover any repair or medical expenses.

Next, take pictures of the accident, including as many angles as possible, making sure that the damage to the vehicles is clear and visible.

5. Call Your Insurance Provider

After you’ve checked for injuries, called the police, and exchanged information with the other motorist, call your insurance provider to notify them that you’ve been involved in an accident.

They will advise you on how to proceed, and provide you with information regarding the type of details they will need, including a copy of the police report once it becomes available.
