What Is CBD Isolate? Your Questions Answered

August 20, 2021

CBD is a type of cannabinoid (active compound) that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. While the world of research surrounding CBD is still quite young, the initial research has uncovered some promising potential therapeutic benefits.

If you’ve started looking around at CBD products online, you’ve probably started seeing terms like “full-spectrum,” “broad-spectrum,” and “CBD isolate.”

Full-spectrum CBD is the simplest extraction of high-CBD hemp, including other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This means that in full-spectrum CBD, there is a small amount of THC. Broad-spectrum CBD has additional compounds but is marketed as being free from THC.

What is CBD isolate, then? What do you need to know about it? Let’s take a look.

What Is CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate is a powder or a crystalline solid that is the purest form of CBD. Containing about 99% pure CBD, this is the most refined type of CBD product you can buy.

To make CBD isolate, a traditional extraction process is first done. This separates all of the active compounds of the plant from the rest of the plant matter. The next step is a refining process that removes all of the other phytocannabinoids in hemp to leave you with a pure CBD product.

The final product can either be a fine white powder or large CBD crystals. They don’t have much in the way of taste or odor as the flavonoids and other compounds have been stripped away.

What Are the Benefits of CBD Isolate?

Several benefits can be attributed to choosing CBD to isolate rather than a broad spectrum or a full-spectrum CBD product. Some people may prefer the isolate form, while others might also want access to the other cannabinoids and compounds in hemp.

No THC

Since CBD isolate is just CBD, it means you don’t have to worry about THC entering your system. Some people are not interested in having even trace amounts of THC, making CBD isolate a good choice for them.

Some people choose to use CBD isolate because they are concerned about testing positive for marijuana on a drug test. While CBD isolate can reduce this risk, it does seem that CBD itself will occasionally create a false positive.

Lots of Ways to Take It

Another advantage of CBD isolate is that there are many different creative ways you can use it. It can be mixed with drinks or food, administered sublingually, or used in several different ways.

Easy to Dose

Measuring CBD isolates dosages is quite easy. This is because you don’t have to worry about figuring out how much of your product is actually other cannabinoids, terpenes, and compounds.

When you take CBD isolate, you can know exactly how much CBD you are taking. Some people might find this to be quite useful.

What Are the Drawbacks of CBD Isolate?

One of the main reasons why someone might choose to use full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD instead of CBD isolate is because of what is known as the “entourage effect.”

The entourage effect is a notion developed through research that there might be a synergistic interaction between cannabinoids and other compounds. This means that it’s thought that the presence of the others boosts the individual effects of each compound.

When you use CBD isolate, you cannot benefit from this effect as it is simply just CBD.

What Is a Good Dose For CBD Isolate?

When it comes to CBD dosage, everyone is different. There are a lot of different factors that combine to form each individual’s ideal dose. These include your weight, age, tolerance, genetics, physiology, and more.

People often use a simple CBD dose calculator to help them find a good starting dose. As a general rule of thumb, lighter people won’t need as much CBD to feel its effects as heavier people.

In general, though, it’s best to start small and work your way up to find the best dose for you. You must accurately measure how much you are taking, as it isn’t advised to try and guess how big a dose is.

The basic rule of thumb is that your best dosage amount is the smallest amount you need to feel your desired effects.

Here are some steps to help you find the perfect dose:

  • Start small with a dose of 5-10 mg to see how your body responds
  • Continue with this same dose for several days
  • If you still don’t feel your desired effects, increase the dose by 5-10 mg at a time, allowing two or three days at each new dose.
  • Record how much you are taking and how you feel every day
  • Never jump dramatically from a smaller dose to a larger dose
  • Reduce your dosage if you experience any discomfort

It’s worth reiterating that CBD doesn’t have intoxicating effects like THC. This means that you don’t have to worry about taking too much about having your mind altered.

CBD Isolate: Is It Right For You?

CBD isolate offers people a way to use CBD without ingesting any other cannabinoids or compounds. For some people, this might be ideal, while others might prefer to try and benefit from the entourage effect.

Either way, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before trying any CBD product. While CBD is generally considered to be safe, there are some known interactions with other medications.
