What Benefits Exist for Military Veterans?

November 10, 2023

As of 2022, the United States had 16.2 million military veterans. These veterans include anyone who served in the active military and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Many of these veterans served overseas and fought in World War II, the Korean War, the Gulf War, Vietnam, Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan. Many others helped train and solve conflicts in other areas of the world to help maintain peace and prevent war.

Their sacrifice and service deserve all of our gratitude and appreciation. Luckily, there are many benefits that veterans and active military personnel receive.

This article will cover five of these benefits.

Healthcare Benefits

One of the most crucial benefits for veterans is access to quality healthcare. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates a vast network of medical centers and clinics nationwide. Unfortunately, one of the negative side effects of war is long-term medical issues. Whether dealing with post-traumatic stress (PTSD) or inhaling asbestos or mesothelioma, veterans often need medical help later in life.

Veterans are eligible for various medical services, including preventative care, mental health services, and specialized treatment for service-related injuries and illnesses.

Veterans also receive priority when scheduling appointments, reducing wait times for medical care. The VA hasn’t always had the best reputation regarding reaction time and treatment, but it continues to innovate and find ways to serve veterans better.

Home Loan Benefits

Veterans can take advantage of VA home loan programs that offer competitive interest rates, low down payments, and no private mortgage insurance. These benefits make homeownership more accessible for veterans and their families.

The VA also assists homeless veterans through various support services, such as housing vouchers and transitional housing programs. A top priority is ensuring veterans have a safe and stable place to call home.

Some companies, such as Wounded Warrior Project, even build and modify homes to better serve veterans who have disabilities. This may include lowering cabinetry, installing an elevator, or customizing a bathroom.

Job Opportunities

Veterans possess unique skills and experiences that make them valuable contributors to the workforce. Various programs and initiatives have been established to help veterans transition into meaningful careers. The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) provides employment workshops, resume assistance, and job search resources.

Additionally, the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) offers employment services and protections to veterans, ensuring they have fair opportunities in the job market. Many companies also actively seek to hire veterans, recognizing the strong work ethic, discipline, and leadership qualities they bring to the table.

Discounts

Thousands of businesses offer military and veteran discounts for their service. These discounts range from getting a 10% discount on coffee to receiving free products like phones and computers from tech companies.

Companies may not always advertise their military discount at checkout or online but will often honor one if asked. Simply asking or searching online will give a clear answer on if military discounts are available.

Burial and Memorial Benefits

When veterans pass away, their service should be honored with dignity and respect. The VA provides burial and memorial benefits to eligible veterans, including a gravesite in a national cemetery, a burial allowance, a headstone or marker, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. These benefits ensure veterans receive a fitting tribute for their service and sacrifice.

Conclusion

Our veterans have made tremendous sacrifices to protect our nation, and they deserve our unwavering support and gratitude. The benefits outlined in this blog post are just a few ways we honor their service and provide assistance as they transition to civilian life.

However, even with the outlined benefits, it may not be enough for some veterans. Being aware and looking for other ways to help them may make all the difference to them.
