Paint Job
Colors are the foundation of any look. From room to wardrobe.
If you’re looking for a quick, cheap, and easy kitchen update, get out a brush and a bucket of paint. Well, after considering your options over a bajillion times, of course.
This is your chance to make an overall statement about your culinary castle. The first impression. You can be…loud and proud! Or—soft, and subdued…
It’s all your personal taste, of course. But if you’re going all in on a makeover for your kitchen, take all the time you need to get the foundation right the first time.
Head over to your local hardware store for a day to peruse over some color palette options. Take some of your favorite samples home to actually test out in your kitchen, see how the sunlight hits each option throughout the day.

New Trim, Who Dis?
Take your color coordination to the next level!
This can be as simple as a new, wall-trim accent or as grandiose as a whole cabinet makeover with crown-molding to boot.
For trimming your walls, be sure to pick up a roll of painter’s tape. This tip will save you tons of time and aspirin in getting perfectly straight, even lines around your walls and cabinetry borders. Painter’s tape has a light adhesive so it won’t cause any tears during removal!
If you have the ambition, consider giving your cabinets a new coloring, as well. It’s a bit of a pain to go and unscrew every door and take out all the contents, but switching up these staples really makes your upgrade stand out.
Better yet, consider removing the doors altogether! Tucking our dishes and pantry items is so retro these days—open space organization is in.
Land, Ho!
One kitchen fad that will never go out of style is the floating island.
Kitchens often have so much empty floor space in the middle, with all the cabinets and appliances pushed up against the walls. Floating kitchen islands are the perfect fit for an upgrade!
Not only does a kitchen island make the space look better, but it’ll also totally improve your efficiency as the master chef of your kitchen. So much more space that you can reserve for chopping and prep work, or cookie racks for cooling while you bake the next batch.
Back, Back—Splash It Up!
Backsplash tiles are still very trendy in the modern kitchen.
Fortunately, you don’t have to get all gung-ho crazy about setting each tile into puddy adhesive anymore. Tiles come in roll-out sheet form that you can apply in one go!
But if you’re looking to get that full, Tuscan vibe—go for it! You’ll have full customization and control over the colors and patterns you make in your tile backsplash.

DIY on the Flipside
While not a cosmetic upgrade, there are some great DIY’s behind-the-scenes that will vastly improve the functionality of your kitchen.
We’re talking cabinet organizers.
You might not think it, but being able to procure the drain stopper out from underneath the kitchen sink cabinet without spending half an hour taking everything else out first is the real lifehack here.
Take the time to save yourself some time. Future you will thank you!

Find Your Light, Girl
Believe it or not, light fixtures in your kitchen can offer more than just light.
They should provide lighting, of course—wouldn’t want to go chopping any carrots in the dark. But your lighting fixtures can offer such versatility in design and mood.
They can be a statement piece chandelier, if you’d like. Or a cluster of dangling fixtures of varying height, adding drama to the air space in your kitchen.
You can have lights that are bright and vibrant for when your kitchen is the cooking workspace it was intended to be. But, you can also have a railing of lights hidden above your cabinets that offer a gentle glow and ambiance for dining.
With some careful consideration, light fixtures are a great opportunity to add depth and character to any kitchen upgrade.
Countertop Flip-flop
Don’t neglect your countertops!
Whether you want to resurface your existing ones or completely replace them, it’s a good option for your kitchen updating ideas.
Resurfacing is as easy as painting, though you might need some extra products to buff out any scratches and chips.
If your counter is too worn for wear, time to switch it up! Many at-home-cooks are discovering the simplistic beauty of all-natural wooden countertops. They can handle quite a more wear and tear than granite or other countertops, and a simple sanding will get them looking new again.
