Three Types of Funerals and the Services They Offer

January 18, 2022

A funeral is more than a way to take care of someone’s body after they have passed. It is also a way to celebrate someone’s life, pay them last respects, and say final goodbyes. it can provide much-needed closure and give people time to grieve or remember.

It can be difficult planning a funeral amidst grief and many other emotions, so be prepared, and knowing the different types of funerals available helps.

Traditional or Committal

A traditional funeral service is one familiar to most people. This takes place at the funeral home, with the casket or urn, where a eulogy can be delivered, people can give speeches, sing, or speak with one another about the deceased and their life. Following the service, there may be a graveyard service or committal service at the gravesite.

Some people may choose to only have a graveyard service, have both a traditional funeral and a graveyard service, or only the traditional funeral. With this type of funeral service, there will be many choices to make. What types of funeral flowers will you want, and will you want a religious figure present to say a few words.

While it is one of the most common and gives plenty of time to celebrate and acknowledge the deceased, it is also complicated. There are many types of jobs in the funeral industry, and this funeral service requires most of them, especially if you want an open casket for the service.

Direct Burial

A direct burial is one of the more simple types of funeral services. This is where the family may choose to have their loved one buried without any service. There may be a reception after or a wake, but it will not be a part of the burial process.

The family may be present for the actual burial and sometimes plan a remembrance later on. It is a quieter and smaller affair than a traditional funeral.

Direct Cremation

Similar to the direct funeral, direct cremation is as it sounds. The body will be cremated without a service, and the family can choose to have a ceremony later if they would like.

With cremation, some people may still choose to have a traditional funeral and look at types of funeral flower arrangements and invite guests. But a direct cremation is without the event.

Cremation still involves plenty of choices, including looking at the types of cremation urns for ashes. Some people may choose to have the ashes kept in the home, while others may scatter them in a meaningful place to the deceased.

Many Types of Funerals

The benefit to having many types of funerals is that there is a ceremony or style available to most anyone’s preference and what they wish to have after their passing. And aside from these main three, there are additional types like burial at sea and a green funeral service.

Choosing the best type of funeral service may be challenging, but people in the industry will help you with the process. If this helped you better understand what funerals entail, keep reading for more useful information.
