Things You Need to Know Before Getting a Tummy Tuck

September 30, 2021

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is the surgical removal of the excess skin and fat on the abdomen to give you a more toned and youthful appearance. Other than cosmetic purposes, there are other reasons why your doctor may recommend tummy flattening, including treatment of hernia and removal of large scars on the abdomen. Your East Windsor tummy tuck specialist will apply this procedure to tighten your abdominal walls. But, before you do so, there are some things to keep in mind. Here is what you need to know about tummy tuck.

What is a tummy tuck?

As you probably know, a tummy tuck is the plastic surgical intervention of the abdomen to improve its appearance. It is performed under general anesthesia, and you will need a few days off from your normal activities for recovery. First, your doctor removes the excess skin on your tummy, which may form after pregnancy or weight gain.

After the treatment, there is a need for follow-up care, and recovery varies among individuals. You should avoid carrying heavy loads for at least eight weeks. However, you can resume light sports activities such as cycling, swimming, jogging, and yoga workouts after 14 days.

You may start abdominal muscle training at three months at the earliest. Also, avoid direct sunlight on the treatment area for at least six months, leading to ugly scars.

Are you the right candidate for a tummy tuck?

Not everyone can undergo tummy tuck surgery. Before the surgery, your doctor assesses your medical history and conducts a comprehensive medical examination to rule out any underlying condition that may lead to complications.

Likewise, the procedure is recommended for women past their childbirth stage, mainly above 40 years. In addition, your doctor will only recommend a tummy tuck if you have a healthy weight.

It is tricky identifying the right procedure, and that is why you should have an open discussion with your surgeon, express your fears or concerns, and get correct answers.

Your doctor will explain the possible side effects of the surgery as this helps you determine if the benefits outweigh any risks from having the procedure done. It will also help you put together an appropriate plan of action based on your situation.

Long-term results need a healthy diet and lifestyle

Even though a tummy tuck aims to deliver a flat stomach, the results may not be sustainable if you do not practice a healthy lifestyle. If you do not eat a balanced diet or exercise, your stomach can return to a pre-surgery situation, including sagging.

Possible side effects of the tummy tuck surgery

Like any other surgery, you may experience nausea or tiredness after the surgery. However, these are the effects of the anesthesia drug, which will wear off after a few hours. In addition, there may be some pain on the treatment site, but your doctor prescribes pain medication and antibiotics to prevent an infection.

It is essential to contact your doctor if you experience excess fluid beneath the abdomen skin or a change in skin sensation and coloration.

As the name suggests, a tummy tuck can achieve a flat stomach and deliver the desired results. Contact Matthew J. Lynch, MD, for a consultation and possible treatment.
