Bladder issues can affect women of all ages, putting a strain on their quality of life, sexual health, daily activities, and emotional well-being. Symptoms of bladder issues can vary between women, depending on the type of issue and its severity. They include bladder leakage, pain during urination, persistent and strong urge to urinate, blood in the urine, and much more.

In this blog post, we will highlight some of the most common causes of bladder issues in women. These include medical causes, lifestyle causes, aging, damage, and cancer. If you have a bladder issue, it is imperative that you seek medical attention without delay.

1. Aging

Urinary incontinence is a common bladder issue and results in the loss of bladder control. There are many potential causes, including aging. This issue affects women significantly more than men, in a 2-to-1 ratio.

As we age, the muscles that support the bladder become weaker, in turn raising the risk of urinary incontinence. Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and eating well can improve the chances of avoiding incontinence as you grow older.

2. Lifestyle Causes

Overactive bladder is a medical condition in which the bladder is unable to hold urine normally. Symptoms include the sudden urge to urinate or urinating without meaning to.

Lifestyle causes can contribute to this condition. Drinking large quantities of caffeine and alcohol can increase the likelihood of experiencing an overactive bladder.

3. Medical Causes

Health issues can also contribute to a person’s likelihood of experiencing an overactive bladder. These include nervous system problems such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Stroke, kidney disease, and diabetes can also contribute to this condition.

4. Damage

Damage to the pelvic floor muscles can result in incontinence. This may arise as a result of certain surgeries such as a hysterectomy. Other causes include pregnancy and childbirth.

5. Cancer

Certain cancers, such as bladder cancer, can result in incontinence. Treatment options for cancer may also mean that it is more difficult to control your bladder.

Other potential causes of bladder issues include kidney or bladder stones, constipation, urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, and side effects from certain medications.
