Learning to fish is something to be cherished, but how do you teach it? Cast a line to our post to learn how!
Scout Rich Locations
As you get older, you will appreciate things other than the act of actually catching the fish. When learning how to fish, kids will most likely be frustrated if they’re not catching anything quick enough. You don’t want them to be bored when first starting out.
To keep a friendly, upbeat pace, find locations that are well-stocked with fish. When learning to fish, you want your kids to have memories they’ll cherish on the ride home and in the future.
Equipment
When thinking of what fishing gear you’ll need, it’s best to keep it simple. When teaching how to fish, all you’ll need is a rod, link, hook, sinker, bobber, and bait. We recommend this kid’s fishing pole to get started.
Now you can teach them how a float works and to move the bait when the fish nibbles. Give them the right grip in the 9 to 11 o’clock position. Teach them how the reel handle will turn too when cast.
Practice Patience
There’s no denying that fishing can be slow at times. While we discussed scouting locations full of fish, you will run into lulls of the day. See this as an opportunity to teach a youngster patience.
View it as a valuable learning experience to go inward. To enjoy the quietness of life. And that it’s more about the conversations you have too.
Invite Their Friends
When the kids get into their teens years, we encourage you to ask them to invite their friends. The kids won’t think it’s that cool to go on a fishing trip with their parents.
The workaround here is to ask them to bring their friends so that they won’t get bored. It is a great bonding experience for all as well. You will learn a thing or two when out in a boat with nothing but the sea.
