Signed, Sealed, Delivered: How to Mail a Letter the Right Way

October 19, 2020

The United States Postal Service handles a huge amount of mail each year. This year, it’ll process more mail than ever, as millions of Americans cast their votes for the 2020 presidential election.

Regardless of what type of mail you need to send, it can be difficult to know how to do it if you’ve never done it before. However, sending out a letter is easy.

Keep reading for a guide that’ll teach you how to mail a letter.

Find an Envelope and Seal It

Once you have your letter or another type of mail ready to go, the first thing that you need to do is find a suitable envelope for it.

If you’re sending paper documents, the envelope you choose isn’t that important. However, if you’re sending heavy items, ensure that the envelope you choose can support them. You don’t want the envelope to break while in transit.

Address the Envelope

After you’ve selected your envelope, the next step is to write the address where the postal service will send it off too.

Write the address in the center on the front of the envelope. Make sure to include the name, address, city, state, and zip code. When writing, use neat, uppercase letters to spell everything out. That’ll help the postal employees read the address without a problem.

Write Your Return Address

If something goes wrong in transit, you want to make sure that postal agents send your letter back to you, as opposed to discarding it. That’s why you include a return address in the upper left-hand corner.

Use the same format and style of writing that you used when you wrote the recipient’s address.

Get a Stamp

After you finish writing both of the addresses, it’s time to get a stamp. You can get these online, at retail stores, or at the post office. Once you decide on a stamp, place it on the top right corner of the envelope. Ensure that it’s stuck on and won’t fall off in transit.

If you’re wondering how long does it take to mail a letter, know that this depends on the destination and the mailing service you work with.

Send the Letter Off

Once you’ve finished getting your letter and envelope ready, it’s time to send it off! Place it in your mailbox and bump the red flag up, take it to a post office, or drop it off in a blue collection bin to send it on its way.
