Rules of Ordering in Mathematics – BODMAS

February 24, 2021

The order of operations refers to a collection of rules that give a convention about which procedures need to be performed first in order to evaluate a mathematical expression. The convention used is called BODMAS. It is an acronym where B stands for brackets, O is for Order, D is division, M for multiplication, A for addition, and S stands for subtraction. Another synonym of BODMAS that is widely used is called PEMDAS (Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction). In layman’s terms, suppose we have to solve the mathematical expression 4 + 3 × 2. As per BODMAS multiplication is given higher precedence than addition hence, we solve this expression as 4 + (3 × 2) = 10 rather than (4 + 3) × 2 = 14. Thus, our answer is 10. In mathematics and computer programming languages, if we do not use this form of ordering, we will end up getting incorrect results.

As rules of ordering in Mathematics is a very important topic that is used everywhere to solve problems, students must understand the basics very well. Since it can prove to be quite confusing, we will see a few methods that can be used to improve your concepts of this topic.

Fun Facts and History

When learning about any topic, it is easy for attention to get diverted if the learning or teaching process becomes monotonous and mundane. It is best to read about how the topic originated and learn about fun facts associated with that subject. It not only helps to keep a student interested in studying about BODMAS but also gives them added general knowledge.

Order of operations came into existence after algebraic notation was introduced. Even though Algebraic notation was introduced in the 1600s however, the rule that multiplication precedes addition and subtraction can be traced back to the 16th century. These books also spoke about exponentiation preceding multiplication. These conventions existed through geometric and verbal modes of expression. The big dilemma that Mathematicians faced was with the ordering of multiplication and division. After several years of research and debates, it was agreed that multiplication and division should be performed from left to right depending upon which operation came first in the expression.

Practice

The only way to master a topic is by solving class 4 math worksheets on the same. These questions should be introduced to students in increasing order of difficulty so that they can build up confidence in a simple section before moving on to solving more complicated problems. This also enables students to work at their own pace without getting pressured. Solving a wide-ranging variety of problems helps students to increase their accuracy and speed.

External Help

Clearing concepts and finding quality practice questions can be a daunting task for young minds. Hence, it is best to turn to a reliable institution such as Cuemath for help. Cuemath is an amazing online educational platform that focuses on building a strong mathematical foundation, ensuring that students master this subject in no time. The certified tutors use several resources such as online worksheets, interactive puzzles, visual simulations, etc., to deliver an impactful and fun-filled lecture. A student is also encouraged to build his logical and analytical skills at Cuemath.

Conclusion

The rules of ordering are used to solve not only Mathematical questions but also programming problems; hence, it is imperative that students clear their concepts at a young age so that they do not get confused as they move to higher grades. Hopefully, this article will help in these endeavors, and I wish you all the best!
