Owning an RV: 5 Top Tips for the Motorhome Newbie

April 19, 2022

If there’s one industry that thrived during the pandemic, it’s the RV industry. Since the start of the pandemic, RV sales climbed 6% in 2020 and soared by 33% in 2021.

Whether you just bought an RV or thinking about buying one, you’ll be surprised to learn there’s a lot to owning an RV. It’s nothing like owning a car or truck.

What do you need to know about owning a motorhome? Keep reading to find out.

1. Know Your RVing Needs

Think through the aspects of owning an RV. You might prefer something that requires little maintenance. You definitely need to have a budget before you start shopping.

You’ll end up with a long checklist of items to have onboard. You probably don’t need all of them. Look through your list again and decide which ones are necessities and which ones are nice to have.

For those buying an RV to tow, make sure that your truck can handle the weight of the RV.

2. Visit Several Dealerships

Once you know what you want, visit several dealerships. Look online to learn about the different dealerships in your area.

For example, lamesarv.com buys and sells RVs, offers services, and you can view its inventory online. That gives you a chance to see what’s on offer before visiting the dealership.

When you visit dealers, ask about warranties before you purchase.

3. Create an Inspection Checklist

Safety is the most important consideration on the road. You want your RV to be ready to handle anything when you’re driving.

That’s why a safety inspection checklist is necessary before you start your road trip. Check the tires for wear and pressure.

Check the oil levels and look underneath the vehicle for leaks. Inspect the roof to make sure sealants still function well.

Keep separate checklists before you leave and have one for regular maintenance tasks.

4. Memorize the Specs of the RV

You’re in the RV and approaching a low bridge. A road sign gives you the clearance height, but you don’t know how tall your RV is.

Do you keep going or do you pull over and check your manual?

That’s why you always need to know the specs of your RV. You’ll get into situations where your RV might be too tall or too heavy.

Knowing the specs keeps you from getting into tricky situations with the RV.

5. Take Your Time

Driving an RV is nothing like driving a car. It’s also no place to get road rage. Remember, you’re in an RV to get a different view of the world.

You’re forced to slow down because that’s the nature of RV driving. Take your time and you’ll enjoy the road much more than driving in your car.

Tips for Owning an RV

Owning an RV opens doors and roads that you haven’t experienced before. There’s also a lot of responsibility that comes with being an RV owner.

Hopefully, you learned a few tips that make owning and buying an RV easier. If you enjoyed this article, you’ll enjoy the others on the blog. Check them out today!
