Origins of Modafinil and Cognitive Enhancers
Modafinil is a prescription stimulant that is used for a variety of purposes. Modafinil is technically classified as a “eugeroic” – a class of drugs which enhance alertness and wakefulness. Eugeroic drugs like Modafinil are most commonly used for sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and daytime sleepiness.
The first eugeroic drug developed was called Adrafinil, which shares many similar properties with Modafinil. Adrafinil was initially developed in France for improving cognitive function, especially in the elderly. However it was discontinued voluntarily and replaced with Modafinil which has been shown to be far more effective.
Modafinil also sees a lot of off-label use for shift work, depression, motivation/productivity enhancement, and as a general purpose smart drug and nootropic.
The idea of a smart drug is still fairly new to society, and many people are curious if they will benefit from them. In general, enhancing cognition in healthy individuals is not a common interest of research institutions. As such, many smart drugs are still a fairly under-studied phenomenon.
However, Modafinil is a highly researched drug that has a lot of publicly available information. At this point its very clear that Modafinil does cause cognitive enhancement even in young, healthy individuals. As such, many people see Modafinil as a strong competitor to other stimulants such as Adderall, and is seeing increasing popularity in many different areas.
How Modafinil Works
Modafinil has a fairly complex pharmacological profile and some of its mechanisms are still fairly elusive.
Modafinil promotes wakefulness by interacting with histaminergic and orexinergic neurons in the hypothalamus – the region of the brain that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. It is also a moderate dopamine reuptake inhibitor and a releasing agent for glutamate, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which can lead to further stimulatory and brain-boosting effects.
Modafinil is very neuroprotective, acting as a strong antioxidant that protects the brain against damage. In fact, Modafinil’s neuroprotective properties have been suggested to account for some of its wakefulness-enhancing effects, by regulating enzymes in the brain that are responsible for scavenging free-radicals.
In short, Modafinil is sophisticated cognitive enhancer that is especially useful for increasing wakefulness and focus. It’s great for doing lots of intellectually demanding work such as studying, researching, or writing.
Why Modafinil May Be the Best Cognitive Enhancer
Modafinil is one of the few drugs that has been shown to cause cognitive enhancement in healthy individuals. As such, it is commonly used by programmers, students, executives, and anyone who has large workloads that require a lot of intellectually demanding work.
Modafinil primarily acts as a general purpose, clean stimulant. “Clean” in this sense means that it effects cognition almost exclusively, with very little effect on emotions and the physical body. Due to this, Modafinil is quite safe, has very low addictive potential, and is less prone to side effects and abuse.
Unlike other drugs like Adderall, Modafinil does not cause serious physical side effects, euphoria, or other emotional disturbances. For people who want cognitive enhancement without unpredictable changes in mood or behavior, Modafinil is an ideal choice.
Many people report that Modafinil allows them to focus for hours without distraction. Increased motivation, mental clarity, and working memory are also quite common. Interestingly enough, Modafinil may not be great for creativity, however. This may be due to Modafinil eliminating aimless “mind wandering” which is often the birthplace of creative ideas. Additionally, Modafinil typically makes you more logical and analytical, which can be the antithesis of creativity.
Should You Take Modafinil?
Always check with your GP before deciding to take Modafinil. While Modafinil is quite safe physically, it is not something you should take on a whim.
If you are experiencing cognitive problems from lack of sleep, stress, or fatigue, Modafinil may be worth considering. If you’re healthy and non-sleep deprived, Modafinil is useful for days where you expect to need to be awake for a long period or do a lot of work. It’s excellent for staying awake while driving at night, doing 3rd shift work, or for simply enhancing productivity and efficiency.
