Make Your Office Work for You: How to Be Healthier in the Average Office

March 8, 2019

Less than 3 percent of Americans say that they live a healthy lifestyle. We all want to live healthier, right?

And, since we spend around one-quarter of our lives at work, the office is the place to start to answer the question of how to be healthier.

In this article, we’ll reveal our workplace guide to be healthy in the office. Let’s get started with what we eat.

1. Say No to Food at Work

“There is no such thing as a free lunch,” right?

Well, it appears that the old saying is no longer accurate. There is such a thing and you can get in the office.

It’s great that your boss appreciates your efforts at work. However, rewarding employees with free cakes and cookies are not always the best idea.

One study discovered that over 70% of the calories of office workers is comprised of free food given in the office.

When you consider that 40% of Americans are obese, this kind of free food in the office needs to stop.

And, you need to learn to say no to cakes in the office.

And instead, start to bring healthy snacks to work, like a bag of nuts or a piece of fruit. That’s all you need to last you until lunchtime or when you go home.

2. Drink Water Over Coffee

The tradition of standing around the coffee machine at work gossiping about the boss has shown no signs of leaving us.

However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t cut down on our coffee consumption.  In fact, Americans are drinking more caffeine than ever before.

While there are numerous health benefits of drinking coffee, we shouldn’t be replacing water with the daily cup of Joe.

The lack of water consumption is a huge problem. Nearly 80% of Americans don’t drink enough water.

Dehydration can cause you to experience fatigue and headaches, along with a number of other health conditions.

So, next time you go for a cup of the black stuff, swap it for a cold glass of H2O!

3. Keep a Good Posture

Did you know that 8 in 10 Americans experience back pain at some point during our lives?

This has been linked with the rise sitting around all day and poor posture. If you have to stare at a computer screen all day, what can you do?

Well, you can maintain a good posture as much as possible. This may require a conscious effort to sit up straight.

Ask your employer to ensure that your computer screen and chair are in the appropriate position for good posture too. You can find out more about the safety standards here.

It is also advised to undertake frequent breaks. Walk around the office, stretch and even do yoga to help improve your posture.

How to Be Healthier?

From keeping a good posture to saying no to tempting treats, there are many things you can do to improve your health in the office.

Now you know how to be healthier in the workplace. But, what about in the rest of your life? How can you lead a healthy lifestyle generally?
