Tottenham Hotspur have managed to find themselves in third spot in the Premier League, just 5 pints behind top spot, and in with something of an outside chance of actually lifting the title. Now, I am not a believer that Spurs will actually be able to pull off the feat, as impressed as I am by what they have achieved. My friend Louis Hernandez Jr on the other hand, he believes that Spurs have what it takes to go on to lift their first league title since 1961, and here are our reasons.
Why They Will
The reason why Louis believes that Spurs will win the title is because at the moment they have very little to lose. Over the course of the season all of the talk has been about Klopp’s Liverpool and Guardiola’s City, and it is easy to see why. Spurs still have Liverpool and City to play and the truth of the matter is that if Liverpool lose to Manchester United this Sunday, it will essentially be in Spurs’ hands, win all your games and lift that coveted trophy, which they are capable of doing. Furthermore this is a Spurs side which has just won 4 on the bounce, the first 2 without Kane, Alli and Son, and the last 2 without Kane and Alli. There are few clubs who can get results in such a situation but this Spurs side has shown real mettle and the late goals are testament to that, with that front 4 back together again, they could very much go all the way, using the last 2 seasons as perfect experience.
Why They Won’t
I would no longer consider Spurs as ‘Spursy’ as I believe that this was never their title to win, having said that, they haven’t shown that they are very good under pressure. Beyond this I think that their run-in is just too hard for them to win all of their games and they still have to play Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, to be honest if they get turned over at Stamford Bridge then it will probably all be over. On top of this Spurs are still in the Champions League and look to get passed Dortmund after an outstanding 3-0 home win in the first leg. This will put added pressure on a tired Spurs side and this could be the difference. My biggest reason as to why I don’t believe Spurs will win their first title since 1961 is because I believe that Manchester City will win every game from here on out, including against Spurs, and that will be more than the other two will be able to manage. If Liverpool do throw this title away, I expect them to actually finish 3rd behind 2nd placed Tottenham and to be completely honest, I hope that I am wrong about it all!
