Is Tap Water Purified? All You Need To Know About The Water In Your Tap

December 13, 2021

With an unlimited supply of water coming right out of the tap, many people are surprised by just how big the industry is for bottled water in the United States. The bottled water production industry is worth more than $8 billion every single year!

Of course, there is a reason so many people are buying bottled water. Many people ask themselves “Is tap water purified?” The less people know about their tap water, the more likely they are to turn to other sources of water that they feel more comfortable with.

But what exactly is in the water coming out of your tap? How safe is it? Read on to learn everything you need to know about the water coming out of your tap!

Is Tap Water Purified?

Tap water always goes through some kind of purification process. However, not all tap water turns out the same way. Depending on which part of the country you live in, your tap water might be more or less pure.

In almost every case, your tap water will be at least pure enough to drink without causing serious health problems. Of course, this is only a general rule. Even in the United States, some people might have dangerous substances in their tap water.

What Is in Unpurified Tap Water?

More frequently, tap water might be safe to drink, but unpleasant to drink. Some tap water has more sulfur in it than people like.

In other cases, tap water can have a lot of minerals in it. Although the right amount of minerals can be good for your health, too many minerals can increase the chance that you develop kidney stones.

So while tap water is purified partially, that does not mean it is as pure as other forms of water.

Different Ways to Purify Water

Tap water with too many minerals in it is called hard water. There are carbon filters for purifying smells from water, but they will not manage problems like hard water.

To take hard water and make it soft, you might want to use something like a reverse osmosis filter. Alternatively, the ion exchange filter is especially effective for managing hard water.

Lots of people ask themselves “Is purified water better?” Even when they hear that a tap water purifier can create better drinking water, they might want to know why. The more you understand salt-free filtration and other types of filtration, the clearer it becomes just how advantageous purified tap water can be.
