How to Troubleshoot a PA Power Outage: Your 5-Step Guide

March 1, 2021

Dealing with a PA power outage can be frustrating, especially if you’re working from home or dealing with the cold. But power outages can occur from anything like a flipped breaker or even a destroyed power line. So how do you know what is affecting your home?

Here are five things to try when dealing with a PA power outage.

1. Check Your Circuit Breaker

The first thing you should do during a power outage in PA is to go and make sure that everything in the house is off. If nothing is working, it is time to head over to your circuit breaker and make sure that everything is in check.

A working circuit breaker should have everything flipped on. If there is anything flipped off that isn’t supposed to be, try flipping it on and seeing what happens. If the power remains off, it’s time to check on everyone else.

2. Check To See If Anyone Else Has Power

You can check if this is localized to you or if it’s everyone in the neighborhood by simply going to the internet. You should be able to see who doesn’t have power by an outage map on your electric company’s website.

If it’s dark out and you see everyone else without lights, you can bet that you’re not the only one affected.

3. Ensure Your Bill Was Paid

But if you are the only one affected, you should quickly check your bill through your phone. Sometimes what happens is people change checking accounts or credit cards and forget to change the electric bill to the new one.

Quickly pay your bill online or follow through with the next step if this isn’t the case.

4. Contact Your Utility Company for Information

If you’re finding that your electric bill is fine but nothing is working, get into contact with your electric company. They might inform you of a very specific issue that is only affecting you, like a damaged power line or possibly a blown fuse.

If they don’t seem to know what the problem is, it is time to move on to the last step.

5. Call an Electrician To Figure Out the Specifics

If all other steps fail, it is time to call in a trusted electrician. They’ll be able to come into the home and troubleshoot what may have happened. It could be something simple like a faulty light switch that blew out the rest of the house or maybe something major like old wires.

Don’t Let Your PA Power Outage Effect You for Long

If you’re dealing with a PA power outage, you’ll want to make sure you’re in good hands. Whether you’re dealing with the hot summer months or a cold winter season, it’s never fun to be without power.
