How to Teach Your Children About Fire Safety

April 25, 2022

If you have children, you need to teach them about fire safety. It’s important your children know what to do if there’s a fire at home.

Data shows there are about 1.3 million house fires each year. Your child will need to take action if there’s a fire. Fire safety knowledge can help save lives.

There are several fire safety tips you need to share with your little one. Read on to learn about essential fire safety tips.

Talk Smoke Detectors

Teach your children about smoke detectors. They need to know that smoke detectors help alert people if there’s a fire.

Teach them how it works. Children need to know how a smoke detector sounds.

Make sure to change the smoke detector’s battery. Do this before the battery goes low. You want to avoid frightening your children as the alarm will go off loudly to signal its battery is low.

Alert an Adult and Call 911

Minors need to know what to do if they see smoke or fire. Teach your children to alert an adult if they see signs of a fire.

Coach your child to learn how to call 911. They should know that a fire is an emergency that warrants calling 911.

Getting Out of the House

When a fire occurs, your children will need to know how to get out of the house. It can take as little as two minutes for a house fire to get out of hand.

At the first sign of a fire, your kids need to head out the door. If the door is blocked, your kids will need to know how to open a window to escape. Practice opening windows with them.

Consider buying escape ladders if your home has two floors. Have them practice exiting through an escape ladder.

You’ll also have to plan escape routes. Determine with your child ways to escape out of every room in the house.

Establish a designated meeting space where everyone will meet. It could be the mailbox or a neighbor’s house.

Check for Heat

Instruct your kids on how to check for heat. They should know how to use a towel to feel doorknobs to avoid getting burned. They also need to know how to protect their faces from the heat with a towel.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

You hope it never happens if there’s a fire. If your child’s clothes catch on fire, your child must know what to do.

Teach them how to stop, drop, and roll. Role play with them.

Fire Prevention

Teaching fire safety to children should also focus on fire prevention. Go over home safety. Teach your children to turn off space heaters when not in use.

Small children should know not to play with the oven. Tell them never to play with matches.
