How to Find a Water Leak in 4 Simple Ways

How to Find a Water Leak in 4 Simple Ways - My Zeo

Imagine life without plumbing. You wouldn’t be able to use the toilet or take any showers! What you’d have to do instead, is go down to a river or well to fetch water.

Thankfully, that’s a thing of the past. After all, almost all buildings nowadays have plumbing systems.

Like all things, however, they can malfunction from time to time. For instance, the pipes can burst and leak without you knowing.

Think there might be an issue in the house? Want to know how to find a water leak? If so, you’ve stumbled on the right page. Keep reading for some tips!

4 Ways on How to Find a Water Leak

When it comes to water leaks, you want to find them as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the higher the chance that there will be damage.

Anyway, here are a few ways that you can do it.

1. Check Your Water Meter

Believe it or not but you can easily find hidden water leaks by checking the water meter. Start by turning off all the water in your home. Once you’ve done that, watch the meter—see if it changes.

If it does, there’s a high chance that there’s a leak somewhere in the house. Keep in mind, however, that the change might not occur immediately (this is often the case with slow-moving leaks).

2. Monitor Your Bill

Monitor your bill. If your water use habits haven’t changed, the amount shouldn’t be rising. If it is, a leak may be to blame. The sooner you find it, the less you’ll have to pay.

You can also compare your current bill with your past bills to see if there’s been any steady increase.

3. Test With Food Coloring

Leaky toilets are a common problem. The good news is that you can easily check to see if they’re running properly.

All you have to do is add a few drops of food coloring to the tank. If it shows up in the bowl, that may indicate that you have a leak from the tank to your drain.

4. Install a Leak Detector

There are leak detectors that you can install that’ll help prevent problems. Basically, they’re small devices that’ll let you know if a leak has occurred in your home.

For instance, you can install them next to water heaters, showers, and other appliances. Some even come with an app that lets you monitor everything via your phone.

Finding Water Leaks

And there you have it—four tips on how to find a water leak. As you can see, there’s more than one thing that you can do. Remember, there’s also the option of hiring a professional if you need help!
