Moving home can be a stressful experience with lots and lots to do and the last thing you want to think about is sorting your driving licence out. Moving home is known to be one of the most stressful experiences we go through, next to divorce and redundancy. In this article we show how to change address on your driving licence. This includes your logbook and actual driving licence.
Change Address on Your Driving Licence
You need to change address on your driving licence whenever you move home. Not many people are aware of this, but if you fail to update the address on your driving licence you can be liable for a fine of up to £1,000. This is just for driving with the incorrect address. Therefore, it is really important to keep the DVLA updated. Now, when you’re moving you also need to update your address across other institutions and companies, such as HMRC, NHS, Council, Water, Charities, Loyalty Cards etc…
If you may need to update your address with other as well as the DVLA, you may want to start with a moving home platform SlothMove.
- Go to SlothMove’s moving home platform
- Enter your information, including your address (previous & new), the date you’re moving in etc..
- Choose who you want to update your address with (DVLA, NHS, HMRC, Boots, Council, Water etc…)
- Click submit
SlothMove will update your address across your accounts simultaneously. With the DVLA there will be a few extra steps and you will be advised of those next steps with a direct link to complete the address change.
Logbook (V5C)
To update address on your logbook you need to be the registered keeper of the vehicle. If you aren’t the registered keeper of the vehicle you won’t be able to process the change of address unfortunately. To change your address you need to fill-in your V5C. Your V5C is a section within the logbook which talks about updating your address. You just need to fill-in that section and then post it to the DVLA. You can post it to the DVLA at this address: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN.
DVLA DD Details
It may be a surprise to many, but when you move you must also update your Direct Debit details with the DVLA. You cannot currently change your DD details with the DVLA online. This is largely due to security reasons. To let the DVLA know and to update the details you should call them on: 0300 790 6802
Finishing Your Address Change
You should have a really clear idea on how to update the DVLA with you address change now. You must inform the DVLA in relation to your Driving Licence, your logbook and your DD details. As we explored, if you don’t complete that update you are liable for a £1,000. That said, there are literally millions in the UK currently who have the incorrect address on their driving licence. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t be caught and fined if not – so let the DVLA know.
