This NFL season has been unlike any other NFL season thus far. The COVID19 pandemic has thrown a monkey wrench into the NFL’s plans time and time again and forced everything from the postponement of games to the benching of some popular players.
But the NFL has pushed through it all and made the most of the 2020 season. Despite some setbacks here and there, they’ve continued to put a great product out week in and week out and provided people with a great distraction from everything else that’s going on in the world right now.
If you haven’t been able to keep up with American football as closely as you usually do, you should find out what’s happened through the first half of the 2020 NFL season so that you’re able to keep up once this year’s NFL playoff brackets are put out. Here is everything you need to know about the current NFL season so far.
The Kansas City Chiefs Are Still the Cream of the Crop
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers back in February. And it appears as though they could be right back in the Super Bowl again this season once everything is said and done.
Although the Chiefs have looked a little bit more vulnerable at times this season than they did last season, it’s clear that they’re still going to be the team to beat come playoff time. They have the most explosive offense in the league and a head coach in Andy Reid who isn’t afraid to add some new wrinkles to it each and every week.
If you haven’t used the Chiefs in your NFL confidence pools yet, you should go ahead and do it soon. They’re almost always a surefire bet to win. View more on NFL confidence pool picks to see which other teams you may want to consider.
The Pittsburgh Steelers Might Not Be Too Far Behind the Chiefs!
The Chiefs might be the best team in the entire NFL in most people’s eyes. But as of right now, they don’t have the best record in the league.
It’s actually the Steelers, not the Chiefs, who sit atop the AFC at the moment, having won every single game so far this season. That could be very important if they’re able to hold on to the top spot since it would give Pittsburgh home-field advantage throughout the NFL Playoffs this season.
So, how have the Steelers transformed themselves into one of the top teams in the NFL this season? One word: Defense.
While the Steelers offense has been formidable thanks to the resurgence of veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, it’s the team’s defense that has put Pittsburgh on its back. And it’s that defense that could give Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs fits if Pittsburgh and Kansas City meet up in the postseason at some point.
The Buffalo Bills Could Be a Team to Watch in the Playoffs This Season
For the last two decades, the AFC East has been predictable, to say the least. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady guided the New England Patriots to AFC East divisional titles over and over and over (AND OVER!) again.
But with Brady leaving the Pats in the offseason to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Patriots have fallen down to the middle of the pack in the AFC East. And it has created a hole at the top of the division that Josh Allen and the Bills have filled.
It remains to be seen whether or not Allen can put Buffalo over the top and help them earn a playoff win this season. But so far this NFL season, he has shown glimpses of greatness and given Bills fans hope.
The Winner of the NFC West Could Very Well End Up in the Super Bowl
We’ve spent a lot of time focusing on the AFC side of things so far—and for good reason. Most of the best teams in the NFL right now reside in the AFC.
There are, however, a bunch of solid squads in the NFC, including the aforementioned Buccaneers as well as the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers. But it looks like the team to watch in the NFC could be whichever team is able to emerge from the strong NFC West.
The Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, and Arizona Cardinals all appear as though they could be Super Bowl contenders…if they can just work their way out of their division. That will be easier said than done, but all of the competitive divisional games that the NFC West teams have played so far this season should really help them out in the playoffs.
The Winner of the NFC East? Not So Much!
There is always one division that struggles to put up much of a fight each NFL season. And this year, that division is no doubt the NFC East (or the “NFC Least,” as some people have started to call it!).
At this point, most NFL analysts have found themselves grasping for straws when asked to pick which NFC East team will win the division. The Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, Washington Football Team, and Dallas Cowboys have all looked awful so far this season and don’t appear to deserve a spot in the playoffs.
But alas, one of those four teams has to make the playoffs at the end of this season. It’ll be interesting to see which bad team of the bunch rises to the occasion for once.
