‘Bespoke my heart,’ cried no one ever. And why is that?–likely because so few people have a real grasp on just what exactly bespoke is. Do you know what bespoke is? Because I didn’t. I had to Google it. I’d heard it used in reference to jewellery, but never gave it much thought until I heard it used to describe, of all things, donuts! That’s right: bespoke donuts. And it was at that exact moment that I took to Google, and asked what exactly bespoke is. After all that fancy usage, though, in the end, bespoke ultimately means ‘made for a particular customer or user’ (Google). It is a new and improved bougie way of saying couture, designer, one of a kind, or custom made.
Customers all over the world are clamoring for ‘the latest thing,’ but also the latest unique thing. Jewelry made to order, brought to life from the mind of the customer, is not only a wonderful product but also a wonderful experience. The experience doesn’t just begin and end with diamond rings, though. Sure, customers can order and purchase originally designed and crafted rings for occasions of all kinds (weddings, engagements, anniversaries, birthstone, commitments, and such) but customers can also benefit from custom pieces of all kinds. Reve Diamonds of London boasts handmade bespoke jewelry of all kinds. Its website proudly announces their custom production of ‘Diamond Engagement Rings, Wedding Rings, Bridal Jewellery, Eternity Rings, Diamond Earrings, Tennis Bracelets and Diamond Pendants’ (Reve Diamonds).
A co-worker of mine recently had her third child. She was quite blue when the time came for her to return to work. She loves her work, so she was quite conflicted over suddenly feeling so disconnected from her work routine. Her husband realized that she was starting to feel that reconnecting with her work life would make her feel disconnected from her children. His remedy was truly bespoke. He had a tennis bracelet crafted for her, with charms on it for each of their children. Each of the charms had their pictures etched on it on one side, and their respective birthstones on the other. He came up with the idea himself, then went around to a number of different bespoke jewelers figuring out how to make his idea a reality. She cried when she opened it, of course, but the bigger point is that diamond rings, diamond jewelry, diamond bracelets, what have you, are all well and good, and beautiful, but the bespoken meaning resonating beneath the surface of every diamond-encrusted charm or bauble is sentiment. So, while the Americans sing that ‘every kiss begins with K,’ perhaps the real truth at the heart of the matter is that bespoke diamond jewellery expresses more than just decadence or indulgence. It’s a gift that begins in the heart and ends exuding love and support on the wrist, the neck, the ears, or the fingers.
Keep all of this in mind for the next time you want to show a little love and a lot of glitter.
