Getting in a motor vehicle accident is never a good thing. Getting in a motorcycle accident is downright awful. Whether it’s a big wreck or a small one, you never want it to happen.
However, accidents are called “accidents” for a reason and all you can do is be prepared to react in the best way possible after the accident.
After the smoke clears from a motorcycle wreck there are some things you can do to make life easier. Read below to learn some quick and easy tips.
What You Should Do After a Motorcycle Wreck
First and foremost, if you’re in the way of traffic get out as fast as you can without making a bigger problem. Next, make sure you aren’t seriously injured. There are just over 1,000 injuries per 100,000 motorcycles registered each year.
Asses your body and breathing to make sure there are no broken bones and your vitals are working correctly.
Give your brain a chance to clear, then do the following.
Talk to Others Involved
Once you are sure that you’re alright, make sure everyone else involved in the wreck is too. Get all bikes and vehicles pulled over to a safe place on the side of the road.
After that, exchange information with the driver or drivers of the vehicles. Get their contact info along with insurance information.
Try to keep a calm head during this time. oftentimes people get carried away or even hysterical when this happens and that only makes things worse. Remember it was nothing personal and try to be kind.
Take Pictures or Video
If you have your phone on you, make sure you get clear pictures or video. Document the scene and its surroundings. Take close-ups of any motor vehicle involved and any injuries that you might have incurred.
Find Witnesses
Hopefully, someone stopped and asked if you were alright after your motorcycle accident. If so, ask them to provide a statement and their contact information. At the very least get their email address.
Some people will be very cooperative with this and others don’t want to be bothered. But, a witness helps not only in a court of law but with your insurance agency as well.
Call the Cops, or Not
Depending on what state you live in. Some places like Los Angeles don’t want you to call the police after an accident if no one is hurt.
Other states require you to inform the police. However, that’s totally up to you and the other people involved.
Call an Attorney
After doing all of the above, motorcycle accident victims should immediately call an attorney. Ask your friends if they know any local attorneys to contact.
If not, search online for a “motorcycle accident attorney near me” and read reviews of lawyers in your area. Find an attorney that specializes in car and motorcycle accidents.
The Finish Line
Motorcycles can be dangerous and being involved in a motorcycle wreck is terrible. If you’re injured in the crash it’s even worse.
But, if you take these steps right after the accident come out just fine. Make sure to protect yourself and call an attorney right away.
