Art Is a Way of Life: 6 of Most In-Demand Careers for Creative People

June 17, 2019

Just who is a creative person?

Depending on who you ask this question, expect to get varied answers. Some will say a creative person is someone can draw or paint a nice picture. Others will tell you everyone is creative in their own unique ways.

Both answers have some element of truth, but creativity is way more than doing something most people wouldn’t. Creativity is a desire, a passion, a way of life, a mental state, something you can’t quite touch, but can see.

If you live and breathe creativity, why not pursue a career that’ll get the most out of you?

Here are some of the most marketable careers for creative people.

1. Architect

Think of the most amazing buildings you’ve ever seen. What’s the first thought that springs to mind?

“Who the hell designed this building?” Admit it!

The professionals behind those buildings are called architects. They plan and design homes, offices, bridges, and other structures. They use their exceptional creative ability to birth ideas that lead to the construction of beautiful, yet functional structures.

If you’re interested in becoming an architect, you will have to pursue at least a bachelor’s degree in architecture and then obtain a license to practice in your state.

2. Interior Designer

Every walked into a living room, office or restaurant and were struck by the beauty of the space’s interior? Maybe it’s the color scheme that blew your mind or the choice and arrangement of various furniture pieces or the various pieces of art hanging on the wall.

Whatever it was, one thing is certain: The place hired an interior designer to do the job.

This is because interior designers are the creative masters tasked with enhancing the aesthetic appearance of indoor spaces. These professionals don’t do the actual painting or arranging of furniture, of course. Like architects, theirs is to plan and design.

Interested in pursuing a career in interior design?

Besides having a high level of creativity, you will need to pursue a course in the field, preferably a bachelor’s degree in interior design. Your state might also require you to get an occupational license before you can practice.

After getting your start in the industry, you might want to specialize. For example, you could become a kitchen and bathroom designer.

3. Fashion Designer

We interact with the work of fashion designers every day. The clothes you’re wearing today were certainly conceived by a fashion designer.

If you’re a creative person with a passion for fashion, this could be the career for you.

These designers typically work in fashion houses and they spend most of their time conceptualizing ideas for clothing, footwear, and accessories. Some specialize in certain niches, such as baby clothes or adult sneakers or tribal apparel.

To get started in this career, pursue a course in fashion design.

4. Cartoonist

Cartoonists, whether they’re drawing political caricatures or creating characters for animation movies, are highly creative people. They have a unique ability to make funny observations even from the most ordinary of situations.

With the TV streaming industry getting more competitive, the need for cartoonists to create animated content will only keep increasing.

So, how do you become a cartoonist?

First, you’ve got to be an incredibly creative and naturally artistic person. If you’re the kind of person who often relies on coffee for creative energy, perhaps this career is a stretch too far for you!

Next, take a course in animation, fine arts, or graphic design.

Also, bear in mind this isn’t one of those careers where you’re hired based on your academic excellence. Potential employers want to see samples of your work, so building a digital portfolio of your work will go a long way.

5. Mobile App Developer

In a span of less than a decade, mobile apps have morphed into a multi-billion industry. By 2020, the global revenue for these apps will hit $189 billion.

Mobile app developers are crucial cogs in this industry. They create the apps from scratch, release them to the various app distribution platforms, and keep working behind the scenes to update the apps.

On the surface, a mobile app developer might not strike you as a creative person. After all, there work is more technical in nature.

Well, that bit is true, but at the core, the most successful mobile app developers are creative individuals. It’s from this creativity that they create apps that solve some of humanity’s most pressing problems.

To become a mobile developer, you must possess a strong love for computers. Although you can gain the expertise via coding and programming boot camps, the more traditional route is to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

The best thing about this career is you don’t have to go knocking on doors looking for employment (though this won’t hurt if push comes to shove). Creating your own app could be the one thing that opens doors for you.

6. Creative Writer

A picture is worth a thousand words, yes, but what if there is no picture?

The world needs someone who can use words to paint a clear picture. This someone is a creative writer.

If you have a knack for words, creative writing is the career for you. Although some writers practice until they make perfect, there’s no harm pursuing creative writing classes to polish your grasp of language.

There are several paths a creative writing career can take. You can go into mainstream media and write for newspapers and magazines. You could go into film and become a scriptwriter. Or you could set up and your own blog and tell stories on your own terms.

Careers for Creative People: Have Your Pick

You’ll spend most of your adult life working. So it’s important to find a career that you’ll enjoy.

If you consider yourself a creative, the last thing you want is to have a job that doesn’t require even an ounce of creativity. You’ll be bored sick. This is why you should have your pick from any of these careers for creative people.
