7 Tips for Successfully Starting a Nonprofit Business

September 13, 2020

A non-profit organization is a great way to earn a salary while giving something back to the community and the world around you. However, a successful non-profit is not an easy venture to begin.

Starting a nonprofit business has to be approached in a similar manner to any business. Below, we guide you through the first steps you will need to take when starting a nonprofit business.

Use of Market Research

Just like a profit organization, you need to make an assessment of your customer base and find out what their needs are. Just as important is looking at competition in the same niches. Even though you are not competing for profit, a more established organization may find it easier to secure funding and backing.

Create a Purpose

Your organization needs a purpose. Once you have done the market research, you can begin to form a purpose-based upon your goal and customer needs. Your purpose should tell people what charitable role you will fill in the local community or the wider world.

Create a mission statement to help define your goals. It should include both short and long term objectives. It will also help when sharing your business plan.

Research Revenue Streams

One of the most vital nonprofit business tips is to research your revenue streams and income sources. Nonprofit groups have three main areas they can bring income from.

The first is fees for services and goods, such as items sold or ticket sales for events. The second is private donations, from businesses, sponsors, or individuals. The third is government grants.

Think about how you will utilize each of these streams before you begin your business plan. Please note that some nonprofit organizations may be able to offer services to government organizations, which could act as a fourth revenue stream.

Starting a Nonprofit Business Plan

The first thing to do is to work out what your running costs will be. This makes it easier to establish the lowest amount of money you need to keep the organization going. You will also need a sound business plan if you are attempting to get funding from anyone, particularly big business.

Every business plan should have a short, concise summary for anyone who does not want to read the more in-depth dossier. Make sure it includes what you offer, the staff you will need to hire, any nonprofit insurance, and a basic breakdown of costs.

Register Your Organization

You will now be ready to register your organization. Different states have various guidelines and laws on this, so check with your local governing body to see what you need to do to register.

Nonprofit organizations can claim tax deduction status once they have registered. To do this, you need to file a 501(c)(3) form.

Create a Fundraising Plan

To increase your brand awareness and raise some much-needed startup cash, plan a fundraiser. This is the fun part, managing and organizing an event at which your nonprofit is the center. Utilize people who believe in your organization and make it fun.

Use Non-Profit Mailing Rates

USPS provides a subsidized service to any nonprofit organization in the US. If you are mailing lots of items or letters, sign up to save your organization some much-needed revenue.

Furthering the Cause

Congratulations! You just succeeded in starting a nonprofit business. Your company is a positive force in the world, helping and assisting those in need and in local communities.
