7 Tips for Open Carry Gun Owners

January 10, 2022

It is the goal of everyone who carries a gun to be considered a responsible owner. Gun ownership is a privilege many American citizens utilize, but several states have begun allowing open carry.

If you plan on open carrying a weapon, it is important to understand what it is and the basic guidelines surrounding it. In some situations, open carrying your weapon could be life-saving. However, in some states, this practice is still considered illegal.

We will discuss 7 practical tips you should know if you’re interested in carrying a gun. These tips will help you understand open carry, concealed carry, and how to be an overall responsible gun owner.

1. What Is Open Carry?

Open carry is when you have possession of your gun and it is not concealed. In states where this is legal, it is up to the gun owner to fully understand their state’s laws regarding weapons. It is also the gun owner’s responsibility to intact gun safety protocols at all times when in possession of their firearm.

2. Know If Your State is an Open Carry State

The most important thing to know before you consider gun ownership is whether your state allows open carry. As of now, thirty-one states allow for open carry of a gun without the need for a license or permit. Tennessee has been newly added to this list.

Understanding your state’s laws concerning gun ownership and most importantly, gun safety will help you avoid unwanted criminal charges. If your state requires permits and licenses, always have those up to date and available in any situation.

3. Traveling State to State

When it comes to traveling with a gun, you not only need to know your state’s gun laws, but also the laws of the state you are visiting. This will keep you out of any trouble when it comes to law enforcement.

If you travel from Alabama, which is not an open-carry state, to Tennessee, you must be aware of gun laws in both states. This shows that you are a responsible gun owner and concerned citizen. To learn more about the laws in Tennessee, in particular, you can click here to view more.

4. Practice Safety When Carrying

Before carrying your weapon in public, learning all the safety protocols involved is necessary. In most states, gun safety courses are available. Take one of these courses to learn as much as possible about how to properly handle your weapon in any given situation.

Using a holster with a trigger cover and practicing respect for the people around you are other things you should keep in mind when wanting to enact proper gun safety.

5. Know Where You Can Carry

While your state may be an open carry state, that doesn’t mean you can carry your gun everywhere. Gun owners are expected to respect posted areas such as hospitals and schools. If a particular business has its property posted, you cannot bring your gun onto the premises.

6. Can Your Weapon Be Loaded?

While a state may allow for open carry or concealed carry, you may find that you are not allowed to have your weapon loaded while it’s on you. In states where loaded weapons are allowed, you may be required to limit the amount of ammo you carry with you.

7. Long Guns and Handguns

Most states have laws concerning which type of gun you’re allowed to carry in public. Before you decide to strap on your handgun, know if they are legal. The same thing can be said for long guns.

Tips for Gun Safety and Other Areas of Life

If you’re interested in enacting open carry in your state, these tips can help you do so safely. Most importantly, fully understanding your state’s laws is the first step.
