5 Telltale Signs of Mice Infestation

July 30, 2020

Did you know that mice and rats spread over 35 diseases worldwide? If you are worried that your home has a mice infestation, we are here to help you figure out the top signs to look out for.

Keep reading to learn these top signs that there might be unwelcome guests in your home.

1. Droppings

Seeing rodent droppings is a sure sign that you have mice camping out inside your house. Mice can excrete between 50-80 droppings every single night and they will be scattered randomly.

If the droppings are fresh they will be dark and moist. If they are old they will be gray and will easily crumble if they are touched.

Look out for droppings in cupboards, near food packages, under sinks, in hidden areas, etc. Wherever you find the most droppings is where the mice are feeding or nesting. If you determine that you have an active infestation because of new droppings make sure to contact a reputable company like Altus Pest Control to help you tackle the problem at hand.

2. Nests

Mice will use fabric, dried plant matter, shredded paper, and similar materials to make their nests. If you find any signs of nests along with droppings and tracks of movement then this is a sign that the rodent infestation is still active.

Look for nests in cavity walls, lofts, ceilings that are suspended, behind refrigerators, under stoves, and under floorboards.

3. Gnaw Marks

If you have an active infestation then you might notice light gnaw marks. As the gnaw marks age they will become darker. You can look out for gnaw marks on food packaging or on your home’s structure.

The size of the gnaw marks will also help you determine if you have mice or rats. The larger gnaw marks means that you have rats instead of mice.

4. Pillars

When you have an established infestation you might find small pillars. These are usually made up of grease, dirt, and urine. You might find little pillars up to two inches in height at times.

5. Strong Smells

Mice urinate a lot and it can smell like ammonia. If you are suddenly smelling ammonia around your home it is a sign that you have mice living in your house. The stronger the smell the closer you are to the mice activity.

Keep in mind that the urine smell can linger for a long time even after you remove the infestation.

Ready to Get Rid of Your Mice Infestation?

Now that you know the top signs of a mice infestation, you no longer have to wonder if you have mice or not. Now it is time to take action and get rid of the problem as soon as you can to avoid it getting worst.
