5 Telltale Signs of a Wasp Infestation

July 7, 2022

Much like the honey of the same name, a wasp infestation is one that you’d want to keep out of your home at all costs.

There are more than 150,000 species of wasps in the world. Only half of those are social wasps, however, meaning they build colonies. These are, by far, the biggest threat to humans.

Swarms of wasps have been known to attack people, especially those with allergies. Consuming a single wasp or an allergic reaction is far better than what a colony of these angry insects might do.

Keep reading to know about wasps and their telltale signs.

1. Initial Sighting

If there’s an initial sighting of wasps near your home or business, it is important to take immediate action to eliminate the problem.

This is often the case in the spring or early summer when wasps are looking for a new place to build their nests. Wasps are attracted to food and rubbish, so make sure to keep your garbage cans clean and your food covered.

2. Escalating Activity

This can be noticed by an increase in wasp activity around the home, such as wasps flying in and out of an opening in the house or wasps building in the yard. More wasps buzzing is a good indication that there are wasps somewhere nearby.

Wasps are most active during the day, so if you see them at night, it’s a sure sign that there is a problem. If you notice any of these signs of wasps, it’s important to take an action immediately to get rid of wasps and prevent further problems.

3. Hearing a High-Pitched Buzz

Hearing a high-pitched buzzing sound is often accompanied by seeing wasps flying around, especially near their nests.  This buzz is produced by the wasps as they fly, and it can be quite alarming.

This is because wasps are constantly looking for food. If you hear this buzz, it’s a good idea to check your property for wasps.

4. Finding Wasp Nests

There are less well-known signs indicating a wasp nest is about to be built. These include wasps that are collecting wood fibers from weathered wood or chewing on plant leaves.

These nests are usually made out of paper and are often found in attics or crawl spaces. If you see a wasp nest, it is likely that there are wasps nearby.

5. Being Stung by a Wasp

If you are regularly getting stung by wasps, it’s a good indication that there is an infestation. Wasps can be dangerous, especially if you are allergic to their sting. If you suspect an infestation, call a professional for wasp removal.

Prevent Wasp Infestation in the Future

If you see any of these telltale signs of a wasp infestation, take action to prevent wasp infestations in the future. The longer you wait, the more damage they will cause and the more difficult it will be to get rid of wasps.
