Whether you’re new to hunting or you’ve been at it a while, it’s always good to make sure you’ve got the gear you need. Being unprepared can make for a terrible day in the woods.
Before you head out into the woods for your next hunting trip, take a look at this list of 5 essential hunting items you need for your excursion. You never know when you’ll find a must-need tool.
1. Warm Gear for Hands
It’s important to dress warmly all over for a sustained day in the woods. Warm fabrics like wool keep you warm even if they get wet. Yet the most important part of warm gear is what you wear on your hands.
If your hands get cold, it makes the rest of your body cold, even if you’re dressed warmly. Try a muff with a clear panel for texting if you’re going to be communicating with other hunters. Then you don’t have to take your hands out to type a message.
You can also get hand warmers to generate heat. Shake them up to start the chemical reaction, and they’ll keep you warm for hours.
2. A Way to Carry Everything
With lots of gear, you’ll want some kind of bag to haul it. If you see a nice deer or another type of game while you’re walking in the woods, you want your hands free to be able to shoot. That makes a good pack essential for your trip.
Choose an expandable backpack with many pockets to carry your lunch, drinks, extra ammo, and other tools. Tactical backpacks are even better, with elastic loops for holding ammo and other specific designs for hunters.
You can also choose a sling bag if that’s more comfortable. Make sure the straps extend long enough to fit over your warm gear.
3. Game Tags
You can’t actually shoot anything unless you have your game tags. The DNR specifies that you need to tag the game right away before you remove it from the kill site. Most states have this rule, requiring an immediate tag.
If you forget to bring game tags with you, you’ll have to go back for them. It’s best to keep them with your hunting gear so you don’t forget.
4. Light
When you head out to the woods, it will probably be dark. If you know the territory well, you won’t have a problem finding your blind. Yet if you’re hunting on state land or you just found the ideal spot last week, you may not have it the route down yet.
In the dark, you’ll find all kinds of obstacles to trip over, from rocks to downed trees. This makes your journey louder and more likely to scare off the game, as well as more dangerous for you.
It’s best to carry a light to help you find your way in and out. If you’re staying out until dusk, you’ll need a flashlight or headlamp for the trek out as well.
5. Most Needed Hunting Items: Knives
You need a knife out in the woods to help you field dress your game or cut a notch to tag the prize. It can also help you with self-defense or in emergency situations. For help choosing a tactical knife, check out this website.
