5 Fun Things You Can Do with Your Disabled Family Member

June 30, 2020

With summer coming up, you’re probably planning all of the fun ways that you can get outside.

If you have a disabled family member, though, you might be worried about keeping them included. You don’t want to leave anyone out of the fun.

If you’re looking for activities for the disabled people in your life, you’re in the right place. Keep reading for our favorite inclusive summer activities.

1. A Trip to the Beach

With the world progressing, there are more and more accessible beaches that make it easy for people with movement disabilities and limitations to get to the sandy beaches.

The beach is the perfect summer spot, but many people refrain from bringing their family members with disabilities. There’s no reason that everyone shouldn’t be able to get to the beach.

While different disabilities have different limitations, everyone can benefit from touching the warm sand and maybe even sticking their feet in the water.

Check the accessibility options at the beach before going and always stay within the range of a lifeguard for a safe and fun day.

2. Adapted Sports

If your family member with a disability likes to stay active, why not try out some adaptive sports?

There are plenty of ways to get outside and have fun while still remaining inclusive to your loved one.

Whether you’re playing beach volleyball, soccer, or any of your other favorite sports, there will be an option for you. There are so many competitive activities for physically disabled adults and mentally disabled adults that let them get in on the action.

3. Museum Fun

Museums are a great option for a day out on the town. What museums does your city have to offer?

There are museums for almost any interest if you look around enough, and often times they have free or low-cost days.

Museums with some tactile elements are great for every member of your family, whether they’re able-bodied, physically impaired, or visually impaired. Being to reach out and touch exhibits is a cool experience for everyone!

Check out more activities for blind adults here.

4. A Summer Picnic

There’s nothing better on a warm and sunny day than a peaceful outdoor picnic. You can work together to make all of your favorite foods and then find a perfect spot at your favorite park or riverbank for your lunch outside.

Sit on the ground or a picnic table depending on the needs of your loved one. Everyone loves gathering together over food and good conversation!

5. Go on a Nature “Walk”

Getting out for a gentle hike through nature trails is a great way to get some physical activity into your day.

You can go look at local plants, see the sights of your local area, and maybe even try your hand at identifying birds by their chirps or birdwatching.

Even if you think hiking might not be an option, there are plenty of available resources to allow your disabled family member to join the fun.

Be Inclusive This Summer With Activities For the Disabled

There’s no reason that your disabled family member should be left out of the summer fun this year. There are plenty of activities for the disabled people in your life that the whole family can enjoy without omitting anyone.

Get outside and out on the town with the whole family this summer.
