3 Ways to Dispose of Your Wearable Gadget Without Throwing It in the Trash

August 14, 2019

Wearable technology has been the latest hit when it comes to tracking fitness, staying in touch with loved ones, and the overall cool factor of your outfit. So with all the new models on the market today, you’re probably wondering what to do with old electronics that no longer serve a purpose.

No matter who you are, you’ve probably had a device reach the end of its life, which begs the question, what now?

1. Donate

If you’re looking to get rid of a piece of wearable technology that is still in good working condition, you should think twice before throwing it out. There are many places that are happy to take these things off your hands and put them in the hands of someone who will use them.

Many charities or non-profits are great places to start when cleaning out your technology drawer. Items received by these types of organizations will be given to those who need them or can’t afford to pay the high price for a brand new device. Another great incentive is the fact that you’ll be able to claim this on your taxes, so don’t forget to grab a receipt on your way out!

2. Recycle

Large retailers including Best Buy participate in a recycling program that makes getting rid of that old technology a breeze. Instead of throwing these items away, taking them to a local electronics recycling facility help to reduce the e-waste in our environment. This prevents more toxins from entering the air and also helps keep our landfills clean.

Often when old electronics are recycled, they’re put to good use by being transformed into new technology that can continue to be used. Companies that collect these types of recyclables will clean them, repair them, and put them back on the market for someone to buy. No matter which way you look at it, you’ll be giving back to the environment and the community!

3. Sell or Trade

Not only do they participate in recycling programs, but Best Buy also offers a trade-in program along with some of the top retailers including Apple and Amazon. You can receive gift cards in return for your used wearable technology, which you can then put towards a newer item of your choice.

In this day and age, many people pay outright for the electronic of their choice. This means that when you’re ready for an upgrade, you can sell or trade-in your old device to save some cash on your new purchase. Why keep that technology sitting in your drawer collecting dust when it can be traded in or sold for something brand-spanking-new?

If you aren’t looking to trade in your old device, consider having a yard sale with old items to generate extra cash. You can use Adobe Spark Post to create a brochure advertising the event to the community.

What to Consider When Thinking About What to Do with Old Electronics

All three of these options, donating, recycling, and selling or trading in your old wearable device helps contribute to the overall health of the environment. Not to mention you might add a little extra money to your pocket. So when you’re wondering what to do with old electronics, consider its age and condition and find an organization or business near you that can help.
