New York has had its share of exciting sports moments over the years, and Sports Collectors Digest has put together a list of 10 events that made superfans like Ron Phillips New York proud to be New Yorkers.
1. Yankees World Series Championship
For the better part of six decades, a Bronx Bombers’ championship seemed about as likely as a Bill Parcells jaunt up Fifth Avenue in a tutu. But since their ’96 title, the Yanks have taken home the Commissioner’s Trophy four times — and counting.
2. Knicks 1990s Championship Teams
If you think that’s easy to do in New York, just ask any Giants fan about those 11 years between championships. Still, the ’90s hoops heyday of Patrick Ewing allowed the Knicks to claim four division titles and two NBA finals appearances.
3. Mets 1969 World Series Championship
The Amazin’s were an also-ran throughout much of the 1960s, but they first made New York a baseball town in ’69 when Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Nolan Ryan, and Tug McGraw helped guide the club to its first World Series championship.
4. Giants SB XXI Championship
New York’s other football team earned five rings in 17 years between 1934-50, but Big Blue struggled through most of the ’60s until their stunning upset of Johnny Unitas’ Colts in Super Bowl 21 set the stage for three more titles over the next decade.
5. Rangers 1994 Stanley Cup Championship
The Blueshirts’ first title since 1940 was also their first Garden ice crown in 54 years! Mark Messier led New York back to the top on an unforgettable night that saw Stephane Matteau score one of hockey’s all-time greatest goals.
6. Knicks 1970 NBA Championship
Russell didn’t win his first ring until his 13th NBA season, so it took one of the game’s most promising young players, Willis Reed, to put New York over the top in ’70. The Knicks’ size and power overwhelmed an L.A. Lakers team that eventually won 33 straight games during that regular season.
7. Mets 1986 World Series Championship
New York has enjoyed ten pro football titles since 1934, but just two baseball championships before one finally came along for the Amazin’s in their magical ’86 championship run, which saw them beat Boston in seven games after coming back from a 3-2 deficit to take both Games 6 and 7 at Shea Stadium. 8. Giants 2000 NFC Championship Game
The G-Men had been knocking on the door for a few years, but it took an improbable victory over the Vikings in one of the coldest games ever played to earn Big Blue their first trip to the Super Bowl since ’86.
9. Knicks 1970 NBA Finals Game 7
The Lakers had won back-to-back titles in 69 and 70 before Willis Reed hobbled out onto the floor of L.A.’s The Forum with his bruised thigh heavily bandaged. But it wasn’t until late in the game that Hollywood discovered just how injured Reed was as he led New York to a 113-99 victory and its first NBA crown during Pat Riley’s sophomore campaign with the Knicks.
10. Giants 1986 NFL Championship Game
New York has enjoyed five pro football titles since 1934, but just two baseball championships before one finally came along for the Amazin’s in their magical ’86 championship run, which saw them beat Boston in seven games after coming back from a 3-2 deficit to take both Games 6 and 7 at Shea Stadium.
The Giants had been knocking on the door for a few years, but it took an improbable victory over the Vikings in one of the coldest games ever played to earn Big Blue their first trip to the Super Bowl since ’86. And who can forget Bill Parcells’ gutsy decision to go for two during overtime after Gary Reasons tied it up?
