How to Retrain for a Different Career

July 22, 2019

Thinking about a career change? In today’s day and age, it is highly common for people to make large career changes with some people even doing this a few times during their working years. The days of sticking to one industry and company your entire working life are long gone and it can actually be easier than you might think to make a large career change.

Why Change?

There are many reasons why someone might look for a career change. They might find that they simply do not like their current work, they may not find the role interesting or the industry might be in decline. Another common reason is that their current role is not providing them with enough money to lead the lifestyle that they wish.

How to Choose a New Career

So, how do you go about choosing a new career? It is important that you find work which you enjoy and interests you as otherwise you could be looking for another change in a few years. Additionally, this should be secure work which will allow you to lead the lifestyle that you want. This will depend entirely on your own interests and personality.

Training

How you go about starting a new career will depend on the role and industry but you can usually find helpful information online. In most cases, this will involve some kind of qualification or class which will teach you the skills and knowledge that you need to succeed. These can often be done online which can provide flexibility – you could even get qualified while you work your existing job so that you can continue to earn.

Equipment

It is also likely that you will need certain equipment, technology or tools for your new career. If you are retraining as a hairdresser, for example, then you will need the scissors, clippers, a professional hairdryer and other bits of equipment and get used to working with these.

Finding Work

It is then a case of trying to find work. It can be hard when you are entering a new field and you do not have experience which is why you might need to take on an internship, volunteer or take on some work for free while you build up your experience/portfolio. Additionally, you might be able to succeed as a freelance worker which will put you in charge of your work. With this route, keep in mind that you will need to handle the business side of the operation too so you will need to educate yourself on registering the business, accounting, taxes etc.

It can be daunting to retrain for an entirely new career but this should not stop you if you are not happy in your current role. It is highly common for people to retrain in today’s day and age and it can be relatively straightforward to do so when you know how.
