How to Stop Sinning in 5 Simple Steps

May 25, 2021

None of us are perfect, yet we strive to be more like Jesus through our walk on Earth. If you’re a Christian, then you know God doesn’t want us to sin. Instead, he wants to protect us.

Learning how to stop sinning is no easy feat, though. In fact, it’s beyond our human capabilities without the help of Jesus Christ. If you’re committed, though, then you can make progress in becoming more Christ-like.

Are you struggling to meet your goals? Read on to discover our five most empowering steps to help you stop sinning and start living in Christ.

1. Acknowledge the Sin

The first step in anyone’s journey to a sin-free life is to acknowledge your sin. Because we are all imperfect, there are always things we can improve upon. That means every single person has at least one sin they can begin working on right now.

So, what is your sin? If you don’t have an answer, then don’t fret! Pray to Jesus for discernment. Ask him to help you identify your sin.

Are you already aware of at least one sin you’re committing? Good! If so, then you’re already on your way to correcting yourself!

2. Increase Your Awareness About the Sin

Next, increase your awareness about the sin. This process should involve research, prayer, and deep thinking. First, identify Bible passages about the sin.

Think about why God would want to protect us from the sin. What consequences come from the sin? How does the sin impact our loved ones? How does it impact our relationship with God?

3. Practice Mindfulness

Now that you’re more aware of the sin, become more aware of yourself when you commit it. Practice mindfulness rather than sinning without thought. How do you feel when you sin?

The more mindful you become, the less likely you are to keep sinning.

4. Repent and Ask Jesus to Break the Bonds of Sin

If you want Jesus to forgive your sins and heal you, then you must repent. That means you must really want to stop sinning and understand your reasons why.

Repentance involves true remorse and regret, so only take this step if you feel you’re ready to change.

5. Empower Yourself to Change

Some sins, like generational curses, take more than repentance. The unforgiveable sin, for example, often arises out of ignorance. You’ll only gain perspective from this sin with time and grace.

Develop your relationship with Jesus, and you’ll make progress. This is how to empower yourself to change.

How to Stop Sinning in 2021

Are you wondering how to stop sinning in 2021? If you follow the five steps above, then you’ll surprise yourself with how fast you begin to change.

Remember — none of us are capable of living sin-free without Jesus. God is also a loving and understanding father, so he does forgive us for sins we commit daily. Rather than beating yourself up over a sinful act, break its power by asking God for forgiveness.

Keep moving forward and don’t lose hope!
